There are a lot of words that people have used to describe Vala: intense, excitable, boisterous, intimidating, enthusiastic… loud.  She has a big personality, but it’s rooted in outgoing friendliness and kindness.  She loves people, loves making new friends, and is very social; but she can be overwhelming to those who are more introverted.  She’s sarcastic and witty and probably too blunt and forthcoming for her own good, but even that is because she values honestly and straightforwardness so much.  Vala doesn’t believe in doing anything by half; whatever she sets her mind to, whatever she’s chosen to care about, she’s does with passion and dedication; whether that’s projects, or hobbies, or school, or people.

Vala is a student at Kaibara Studying Neuroscience and Mechanical Engineering; the engineering part would have likely happened either way, since she’s always been fascinated by technology and mechanics and both her parents were also engineers; but the neuroscience focus came out of her desire to improve prosthetic technology by making it fully integrated with the human nervous system.  Not a surprise, since Vala herself has a prosthetic right arm as a result of a car accident when she was 10 which also killed her mother. 


Vala has lots of friends, in fact, she’s more than willing to let everyone she meets be her friend if they want.  She enjoys people a lot, they just don’t always enjoy her; but those that do will find that they have a friend for life in Vala.  She’s loyal and fiercely protective of her loved ones, and despite often being called overwhelming, she’s never been accused of being overbearing.  She is honest, straightforward, and unapologetically herself, which means treating all people equally.


While Vala can certainly rub people the wrong way, which is enough for other’s not to like her, she isn’t the type to consider anyone an enemy.  Thanks to leading a somewhat sheltered life in that regard; she’s never met anyone who was truly malicious or cruel; and she isn’t bothered by clashing personalities.  That being said, she is the type of person who would hate HARD if the right situation presented itself. 

As far as potential plot opportunities, her arm is pretty high tech and experimental, and her father has been SUPER protective of it’s design; there is always the chance that some other person or tech-start-up wants the technology for themselves and choose to go about it by targeting Vala to use as a bargaining chip against her father. 


When it comes to romance, Vala’s older brothers like to tease her and say that she’s going to grow old alone with nothing but cats for company.  Her response to their good natured ribbing, is generally something along the lines of: “only if the cats are robots.”  At which point everyone laughs and goes back to eating dinner and talking about more interesting things than Vala’s lack of a love life.  Vala has zero experience with romance and hasn’t even gone on a single date.  It is not that she has anything against the idea; but dating was never anywhere near the top of her priority list in high school, and she wasn’t about to risk her grades or acceptance into University for nothing more than the opportunity to suck face with another student.  Now that’s she IN college however, she has at least given it a thought, which is a step in the right direction.  That said, with nothing to base an opinion off of, Vala’s sexuality and preferences are something she has yet to determine. 

I decided not to pigeon hold her into a sexuality right off the bat, rather just let her go and see what evolves organically through character interaction.  That said, anyone who wants to be in a relationship with Vala is going to have to be okay with her occasionally over-the-top personality.  While experience will help her learn when it’s appropriate to reign herself in with a partner, she’s not the type to change who she is for someone else.
