Morning Coffee (Open)
« on: April 10, 2021, 09:42:42 pm »

Sighing tiredly, Mazaki Anzu entered the Melody Cafe. She never thought she'd hate mornings but working an actual full-time job on top of going to college would make anyone's original perspective of things change after they leave high school. Now the brunette preferred to sleep in, simply because she was always cramming to do school assignments and viewing case papers for work. She didn't know what it was like to have free time anymore, much less have any fun. She did have to take some responsibility for that considering she wasn't very trusting of others compared to before. Right now, her brain was fog. She didn't have classes or work today surprisingly which never happened at the same time. It was either one or the other. Today was one of those rare days. Coupled with the fact that it'd finally begun to warm up outside which meant she also didn't have to wear an overcoat to avoid freezing to death.

No, she was able to wear something more comfortable. A simple black short-sleeved long t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts with brown shoes that were almost reminiscent of an American shoe brand known as Timberland. It was clear hers were not such a brand as labels weren't something Anzu was into when she bought any shoes or clothes. She preferred to dress comfortably as it was warm enough to do so now. Warm as in more humid definitely so the cool air from the AC of the cafe was a welcoming feel. She came here on occasion before work or on her days off, making her a frequent customer. Approaching the counter, she'd asked the cashier manning the register for a medium hazelnut coffee with a small portion of sugar. Anzu really needed a pick me up. For a day off, she didn't know what to do with herself. She'd asked her sister if she wanted to come with her so they could spend some time together but she told her she had some to do today so she couldn't.

Anzu couldn't help but wonder what it was but she hoped that Kuri was staying safe while out today. So, that left her alone to do whatever, which was pretty much nothing. They cleaned their room regularly so that didn't need to be done, neither did laundry. That only left the brunette with the idea to come here and clear her head for a bit. It beats sitting in the room at the Amestia Inn alone left with her thoughts. Not something she wanted. The wait for her coffee was over and she'd paid the cashier for it, thanking them before going to find a free table to sit down at. The tables were already crowded full of people but she managed to spot one table in the far back of the cafe. Anzu had made a beeline for it before she could even get there, a group of people had immediately claimed it, leaving her to stand there in limbo as she narrowed her eyes and sighed. 'Well, that's just great. All the tables are taken now. I can't ask someone to sit with them and I don't know them. That's rude and not to mention creepy,' she thought, turning around to head toward the exit but even when she tried to leave, more people wanted to suddenly come in after her to place their morning orders.

She'd almost lost control of her coffee but she held onto it, managing not to spill it as people passed her to get to the counter. Now there was a line blocking the door, making Anzu sweatdrop. She was currently stuck standing in front of the trashcan until someone needed to throw something away, then she would have to move. She thought some sort of event was going on but then she remembered she's not frequently here all the time and it's always a busy morning rush at the cafe. So, she was going to have to wait it out until the line moved so she could leave or someone left one of the tables so she could sit down.

Kyu-nari was used to working mornings, in fact, most days he began his shift at the teahouse before the sun had even risen so that he could have the day’s offerings prepared in time for the teahouse to take its first customers.  He had been waking up early for so long now that the habit was quite ingrained and not something that just disappeared on the one day a week that he didn’t have to work.  Nari had already indulged in a morning run, showered, and made a grocery list by the time the time most people were getting out of bed; and even after all that he found himself restlessly debating what to do now.  The shop he wanted to go to wasn’t open yet, his friends were never awake this early, and he still hadn’t quite found the resolve to go and check out the amenities his new apartment complex had to offer.  They sounded lovely when he was told of them on the tour, he was certain that they would be just as lovely in person… on another day, maybe… were they also open 24 hours?  If they were, it meant that perhaps he could check them out the next time he had an early morning day off… before anyone else was likely to be using them… not today though, that window had already passed; and this realization only compounded the restlessness he was already feeling.

Knowing that sitting in the small apartment wasn’t going to help matters, Nari threw his journal, pencil-case, and pair of books into a small messenger bag and headed for the Melody Café.  His coworkers liked to tease him about the fact that despite working at a teahouse, Nari held a deep and personal love for a good cup of coffee.  He took the good-natured ribbing in stride, and admittedly had developed a fondness for tea as well over the past couple years.  The sun was already starting to really warm up the day; but there was enough of a lingering chill that he was grateful for the lightweight pale blue colored cardigan.  The loose garment draped off his broad shoulders and hung, open, to his mid-thigh.  Underneath that he’d opted for his softest pair of black jeans, flexible black suede wraparound boots, a sleeveless black turtleneck.  The outfit was presentable enough without sacrificing comfort, it wasn’t as though he had anyone he cared to impress at Melody.

Nari was pleasantly surprised to find that he had arrived at the café early enough that it wasn’t yet packed with customers, something that he knew would change as the morning drew on.  After collecting his order, he also managed to get a small two-person table by the window where he could keep the wall at his back and the entrance in front of him.  He couldn’t help the small smile that bloomed on his features as he counted his luck and pulled his waist length hair over his shoulder and into a loose braid.  Settling into a book after that was easy; his earlier restlessness ebbing away along with the time, which he quickly lost track of.

**

It was impossible to say exactly what drew Nari’s eye to the young woman fumbling her coffee cup; her awkwardness, as she glanced around at the full tables, was nearly tangible.  On a morning like this one, the café filled up quickly with people enjoying the time off from work, students not having classes, and moms gathering for a much-needed morning out with their friends.  It meant occupied tables were more likely to stay occupied, at least in the immediate future.  His eyes were drawn to the empty spot across from him and then back up to the brunette.  With a pang of sympathy, Nari placed the marker back in his book and set it beside the large cup of coffee.

Excuse me,” he raised his voice enough to be heard over the people nearby, though not enough to be disruptive.  Tucking a stray lock of hair behind his ear, he also gave a small wave, one of those motions that let people know you were trying to get their attention.  “I have an empty chair, if you’d like somewhere to sit?” He gestured towards the seat and gave her a gentle, albeit reserved, smile.

Out of force of habit, while remaining where she stood, Anzu reached into the pocket of her shorts to pull out her phone and check it. With it still being so early, she wouldn't expect Kuri to text her but, even so, she was being her usual overprotective self and just wanted to make sure her sister was fine. Seeing there was nothing from Kuri, the brunette didn't bug her by sending her a text. She had enough trust in her sister that she wouldn't go out to places she shouldn't be or do things she shouldn't be doing. No, it was just that pang of worry as her older sister that would never go away. Coupled with Anzu's own previous experiences, it wasn't that she didn't trust her sister, it's that she didn't trust people her sister would associate herself with. Anzu knew if she were to push too hard in constantly invading her sister's life, she'd more than likely push her away. And she hadn't wanted to do that.

This didn't stop her from feeling the way she did even if it in many ways heavily affected her own life. Outside of the friends she'd come to know and still keep in contact with to this day, Anzu hadn't made much of an effort to socialize with other people. This was largely due to how she was treated when she and her sister lived in Domino and the memories and times are still pretty fresh for her. She mentally scolded herself as she pushed those thoughts away once again while raising her cup of coffee to her lips and sipping from it. It was times like this, she really could use a distraction but there was no denying that part of her didn't even feel like she existed. She was there but also not. It was a disheartened feeling.

Even now as she stood where she was waiting for the line at the counter to move, no one really paid her any mind. She found that to be a good and a bad thing. The reason for that was she may still keep in contact with her friends, she wasn't with them regularly spending time with them like before. The brunette missed those days but just like her friends, she had to move on with her life too and rebuild it. She just ... wasn't sure how. Putting her phone away, she returned to sipping her coffee. The heat from the cup warming her hands despite them not needing it. The coffee was helping raise the fog in her mind a bit. It didn't erase the dilemma of any of the tables coming vacant, leaving her to remain standing as she was.

Her eyes scanned around the cafe once again, her coffee to her lips as she'd done this until her eyes came upon a guy sitting at one of the tables trying to get her attention. At least, that's what she believed which made Anzu blink a few times in confusion. The brunette wasn't entirely sure if the male was talking to her or someone else. The last thing she wanted was to be part of a misunderstanding. That and the idea of it already made her uncomfortable, even if they were offering her a place to sit down so she wouldn't have to continue standing. Part of her wanted to just put it out of her mind and ignore it but the other part thought of her sister and how she knew she'd scold her for not at least trying to be social with others. Anzu knew if she'd told her sister about this venture, she'd never hear the end of it.

That meant taking the risk in approaching the table the guy was sitting at to make sure he was speaking to her and if not, she would just try and squeeze through the crowd and leave. That urge to do so was already rising within her due to the crowd because there wasn't anywhere for her to sit. Heaving yet another sigh, she held onto her coffee with both hands and carefully trudged her way toward the dark-haired male's table. Once she got there, she remained standing, with clear skepticism is seen on her face as her eyes never left him. Clearing her throat, she finally spoke up and asked, "Were you talking to me or someone else?"

Nari didn’t miss the blinks, or the surprise on her features, when he finally caught her gaze.  His small smile remained in place as she threaded her way through the other café patrons until she’d reached his little corner.  His head dipped into a nod at her question, “yes, I was.  You looked like you were looking for an empty table, but well…”  with a shrug he trailed off.  “I thought I’d offer you a spot, even if it’s just while you wait for something of your own to open up.”

Now that he thought about it, Nari could understand her hesitation.  He hadn’t given the offer a ton of thought at the time; but he likely would have been just as skeptical if their roles had been reversed -maybe more so.

I was just reading; so, I can be quiet, and there is certainly room.”  He added, hoping to put her more at ease.

Sure enough, there was an American looking graphic novel in front of him.  The word Dauntless, in English, scrawled across an image of what looked like it might be some sort of young superhero in a cityscape.  Despite the book clearly being written in English, he spoke flawless Japanese with only a hint of an accent; and even that didn't sound American.

Comic books and cartoons had been his mother’s idea, a way to practice his English during a time when she still naively thought that one day his father would take a more permanent role in their lives.  By the time she realized it wasn’t going to happen, Kyun’s English was already better than his father’s Korean -which admittedly was never that good in the first place- and he was neither surprised nor disappointed at the realization.  He’d known, longer than his mother had at least, that Wells was never going give up his life in America.

"I see," was Anzu's response to the young man as she stood before him. While she appreciated the offer, he didn't have to allow him to sit with her. Seeing the book on the table didn't escape her eye and she was certain that despite the noise around them, it's possible he may have preferred to be alone to read in peace. Anzu hadn't wanted to disturb him from that by sitting there awkwardly across from him in silence. However, judging by his words, he believed that she was the one that would've preferred peace and quiet to sharing her time with another person. Well, he was only half-right about that. Though it wasn't so much wanting to spend it alone as it more was about her just not knowing what to say. Along with other personal reasons which he didn't need to know about.

She took a quick look around the cafe again and sure enough, no other tables were free. Even the ones where someone was sitting alone by themselves weren't free either. Nor were any of those people offering for her to sit down and join them. She was only here for coffee and was going to sit for a while but hadn't expected to be stuck in the sudden morning rush crowd of people coming into the cafe. Plus, the line by the door was still long and the one thing she wanted to avoid was getting anyone riled up by merely asking politely if they could move so she could leave. And the staff at the cafe didn't need that either. Quietly, she walked toward the empty seat across from the dark-haired male and sat down, placing her own coffee atop the table with her fingers now tapping the side of it lightly.

Luckily for her, she'd been seeing a therapist to work through many of the fears she had. One of which included associating with men she didn't know and having an anxiety attack just being around them. As long as a certain distance was kept and they didn't attempt to touch her, the brunette would be fine. She'd sooner leave quickly before causing a scene around others. "Arigatou," Anzu thanked him in a soft tone while looking down at her coffee.

You are very welcome.”  His response came out polished and polite, and as soon as he said it Nari was struck by the realization that he wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do next.  He had told her that he would go back to reading, though that was more an attempt to ensure her that she wouldn’t be imposing on him, and nor would he impose on her; but after sitting at the table, she hadn’t immediately engrossed herself in something else.  It’s hard to say what he had been expecting, maybe that she would pull out a phone or people watch out the window; but when her gaze remained focused on her coffee, he felt a twinge of guilt.  Clearly, she was nervous, or uncomfortable, or something; an emotion he could sympathize with. Once again he found himself wishing that he was a bit better at socializing and making friends.  Not that he expected her to be friends with him, she didn’t know him and that would have been rather presumptuous.

Kyu-nari had never been adept at hiding his feelings, and his small inner dilemma played out across his features in a combination of awkward uncertainty and deep thought. His dark brows furrowed with focused as he nibbled unconsciously on his lower lip.  One of these days someone was going to tell him that his face was an open book when he got stuck in his head, one of these days he'd likely be a little embarrassed to learn it; but for now, he pulled himself out of the thought spiral by glancing back at his companion and giving her another -hopefully friendly- smile.  "Uh- Kyu-nari.  I uh... my name, that is."  His lips twitched in wry amusement.  Leave it to him to end up stumbling over something as simple as a name.  "I don't get the chance to come hear often in the mornings, I'm usually at work.  I'm surprised to see how crowded it is."  There, that was better, casual and conversational.

Outside of the noise of the customers surrounding the two of them, Anzu and this young man shared an awkward silence. She hadn't known what to say to him, what to talk about. Granted, she was only here for coffee and to spend some time to herself but now she was sitting at a table with a complete stranger and she couldn't think of a word to say. Her therapist did tell her that she needed to engage more with people like she used to but that was really difficult for her, especially with men. She wasn't fully there yet. It wasn't as difficult with her coworkers or even her friends but complete strangers, it was different. Everything was different now. The sounds of conversation continued and once again, Anzu raised her cup to her lips to drink some more of her coffee.

When she'd done this, it's when the young man before her spoke but introducing himself to her. She hadn't noticed until now that he had a bit of an accent in his speech despite speaking clear Japanese. And judging from his name, she'd confirmed in her mind without having to ask that he wasn't native to the country. But it was possible that he could've been half-Japanese as well. That was pretty common in Japan as well as other countries. However, many families were traditional and frowned upon such a thing. The brunette wasn't going to assume this guy's situation. She wasn't expecting a conversation between them but since he was engaging, it wouldn't seem right to just ignore him. In fact, it would be rude to do so. She set her cup back down and gave a small nod. "Hrn," was the response she gave before saying, "I'm not usually here in the mornings this long either. This is a first in a while for me to not have both work and school in one day."

That wasn't untrue which is the reason why she was here. But she didn't feel like unwinding at the mall. Much like the cafe, it would be filled with too many people. That and she didn't have a real reason to go to the mall for anything. The only thing of interest would be the movie theater but she hadn't thought about that until now and wasn't sure if there was anything playing she wanted to pay for and watch. At least she wouldn't fall asleep during it if she decided to go there for a movie later. That was a maybe though. Anzu didn't plan that far ahead for a day to herself. She just wanted to get out for a bit and not feel like an inconvenience to anyone. She wasn't sure if the young man felt that way but he was being nice even if she felt a tad skeptical. Lightly, she drummed her fingers against the side of her coffee cup before deciding on telling him her name. "Mazaki Anzu..."

“It’s nice to meet you Anzu-san,” Nari added with a small bow of his head.  It occurred to him now, that he couldn’t actually remember the last time he’d tried to be social with someone at random.  Becoming acquainted with co-workers had been… well almost inevitable, he supposed.  After working at Kosoan for two or so years, he had ample time to get to know them little by little, in mostly unassuming doses.  You start with a polite hello each day, the next thing you know someone is talking about music, or asking about a book you’re reading, or you’re asking them about how they’re schoolwork is doing; and somewhere along the lines, you realize that you’ve made a friend.  Then of course, once you were friends, there were things like social outings or movie nights; you met their friends and they introduced you, and then maybe you made a new friend.

But Kyu-nari had never been the type to just walk up to random strangers and say hello, at least, not in his adult life.  Sometimes, when he thought back to his childhood, he could almost remember a boy who was friendly and outgoing and cheerful, who used to trim flowers from his mother’s garden to gift to the neighbors or keep other children company while their parents were in the shop.  Even the memories were vague, like a long-forgotten dream; maybe he’d never been that boy, maybe the years between had caused him to romanticize his childhood in a way that softened the blows that came later.  Or maybe it was just growing up, surely it was no secret that children often saw the world through rose-colored glasses.

Now, here he was, seated a table with a young woman he didn’t know, completely blanking on what he was supposed to do in situations like this.  There were many things that Nari felt he was good at in his life; but being ‘cool’ and ‘suave’ were not on that list.  “I uh… sorry…” he fished for words, absently tugging a lock of hair while he shot Masaki a sheepish smile.  “I guess I’m not very good at this whole… talking thing.”

“You um, you said you go to school and have a job?  That’s a lot, you must work very hard.  Some of my coworkers are in school as well, and I’ve always found it very impressive.  I can’t imagine trying to juggle both things.”

"Hrn." It was the opposite for Anzu for different reasons. She used to have no issue talking with anyone but past experiences, again, have just made her wary of people. It's not as if she didn't want to engage, it's more she no longer had that trust she once did in people. Granted, she tried avoiding such issues by burying herself in work and school but her therapist would always remind her that she isn't going to get better nor get over her grievances if she doesn't put forth some effort into attempting to socialize with others. Anzu had to remind herself constantly that she wasn't in Domino anymore. She was lived in Tokyo now. Both her and Kuri for a chance at a better life and hopefully around better people.

The move wasn't easy but it was necessary for the brunette's state of mind. Though it was just easier to not think about it, she knew her therapist was right. She had to be more engaging with others and learn to trust people again. It's the only way she'll be able to move on. At least in the area of being able to make friends. Anzu wasn't focused on finding a mate, nor was she interested either. That was something she felt wasn't necessary in her life as it was for others around her. It was also a topic she'd rather much avoid discussing with anyone she talked to. As long as it wasn't mentioned, she was fine. That said, despite how currently awkward the start of this attempted conversation was between her and Nari, at least it wasn't that. Just the two of them pretty much feeling the same way. "It's ... been a while since I've made any new friends. I never used to be awkward at it like ... I am now," she replied finally with a small frown.
