murder at the docks // open
« on: May 31, 2020, 10:53:34 am »

(OOC: Anyone who wishes to investigate can take over the hardcore details from here. I'm just giving a general picture. Feel free to add more to it if you wish. I don't mind.)

Haley was at the docks this afternoon hiding behind one of the cargo crates to avoid being seen by the police in the area. She'd gotten a tip that a murder had taken place at the docks this morning. This area was known for being populated with boats whether they were owned by locals out on the water fishing or cargo ships bringing bringing in or preparing to deliver goods. Then there were some that just liked to watch the water from afar, taking in the sights. Nothing wrong with that. It was just sad this spot had become tainted with a crime because someone thought it was a good idea to murder an innocent woman and dump her body in the water while believing that it wouldn't float back to the shoreline of the docks or wash up anywhere really. It was clear to the dark-haired woman that whoever did this had no idea what they were doing. This was sloppy work at best. She only had partial information about the victim that'd been killed before her murder. She was the mate of someone that'd mysteriously disappeared which is why Haley was here. She wanted to report the truth of this story. Adjusting her camera's focus, she snapped a few photos of the evidence that she could see from a distance where the police had been setting up evidence tags. Haley had no guarantee she'd solve the murder that happened but she did want to at least figure out the killer's angle. This was an innocent woman's life here and she was sure that her family would be distraught over her death.

She was someone's mate so of course she had to have a family that wanted to know that she'd been found. Maybe not in the best way but she had been found. Unless of course her family were behind it which wouldn't make sense but it wouldn't come as a surprise to her if the investigation went in that direction. After all, many didn't have the luxury of choosing who they wished to be mated with. Their mates were chosen for them and they would take any drastic measures to get out of it. For now, Haley just had to keep her eyes and ears open for anything that might be of use without getting caught. It may have been too late to save the woman but not too late to catch her killer. They had to be found. Taking out her tape recorder, she held it to her lips and spoke in a quiet voice to once again, avoid drawing attention to herself. "My first big scoop in Tokyo, Japan involves the murder of an Omega woman that'd mysteriously gone missing for three days. From the news reports I've heard, she was last seen leaving her place of work to go home. Before then, she'd had disagreements with a few of her coworkers which from what was reported, it was about work and nothing more. I don't believe this. Leaving it as simply 'work-related incidents' is poor police work. The victim's name was Mari Takanawa. The injuries she'd sustained was a cut to the throat which is a clear instant kill along with bruising on her hands and legs. For the moment, it is unclear if she has any other injuries or if the injuries she has involved her possibly being ****. It is clear that the docks isn't the original crime scene. She was dumped here and murdered elsewhere. More details later. Haley, over and out." Haley turned off her recorder and placed it back in her bag for the time being.

Haley had more possible ideas of what happened to the victim but she didn't want to continue rambling on about things that were so far left it would've just sounded ridiculous. However, it wouldn't have been uncommon. Since being here and living in her car, she'd discovered that there was a lot of supernatural aspects within the country of Japan compared to her hometown. She'd seen people do things that you'd otherwise see on TV or find in some sort of graphic novel story but at least the one thing she came down here to confirm was technically true. But she couldn't report on it as a story since no one would really care. Since she knew that people here in Tokyo had supernatural abilities, it was common to assume that some crimes did have supernatural aspects behind them. Each reason different and stranger than the first. Haley was hoping that this wasn't the acts of someone harming this woman for obscene supernatural reasons. Just a basic and simple murder that can be solved with just regular people involved in it and finding out who was jealous and crazy enough to kill poor Mari. 'It's so terrible how this all happened but I pray that there's nothing more sinister behind this murder but I just can't be sure. I need this big break. I have to find out the truth and report it. I will get to the bottom of why this happened. No one deserves to die this way, no matter who they are,' Haley thought.

Haley then carefully decided to move from her current spot and hide behind yet another cargo crate that was a tad bit closer to the scene. Her heart was pounding fast against her chest as she did her best to calm herself before carefully peering over to see more of what was going on. She then crouched down in order to take better pictures of the evidence near the marked tags, aiming her camera and adjusting it to take more pictures. With all this gathered, she couldn't post anything just yet without making sure she had all the facts. She wasn't a sleazy reporter like her rival Angelica was. No, she was going to report the truth and nothing more. Haley wasn't so desperate for a job that she'd report lies. It wasn't right. If they didn't want the facts, well there were other reporting jobs out there that did. She knew they'd want this killer found and caught as much as anyone would. Especially Mari's family who'd been looking for her.

Dusan really had no interest in staying fixed in Tokyo for very long but sometimes there were investigations that he felt were better handled on his own. assigning younger field agents was all well and good when it came to the regular defense of the town he never expected them to be quite as proactive in their search for the source of trouble until it reared its head to give them a starting location. Dusan was under no such limitation and he had grown rather bored with the day to day mediocrity of staying at the base while having to micromanage things. Sheesh if he had ever thought it would get this tedious he wondered if he would have established SPIRIT in the first place. Others might have called him an ego maniac but the years had taught the man that he was needed to do the things that others couldn't, or rather -wouldn't- do.

By now he was driving his car out towards the ocean harbor. Goodness how he really would have preferred to be on a motorcycle. There was just much more maneuverability in one and the feeling of freedom as the elements rushed passed you. Yet it didn't do well for ones public image to show up on a motorcycle when you were supposed to be someone of importance. Your method of transportation said a great deal about your character and today he had to be someone of significance and not just some mysterious guy on a bike.

His earpiece signaled him when it came into range of the police who were gathered near the crime scene. Quickly turning down another side street he opened up the car to make his way as quickly to the crime scene as possible. It was important to arrive early before anyone tampered with anything or any evidence had been picked up. And that was how he found the local police, gathered around and putting tape down to prevent people from getting close. To the police or anyone else watching what they saw was a black Mercedes pull up and cut its engine. As Dusan stepped out he had made sure to dress for the occasion. He wore a fitted suit that gave him the air of importance.

Even those who didn't see or hear his arrival could feel it. The officers and some of the locals turned from what they were doing as he disembarked from his car and approached. Most seemed to freeze while only two turned to approach him in a manner to intercept him from reaching the blocked off crime scene. It was a little bit of a hassle but it did show Dusan which of the police had the most resolve. At a glance Dusan would assume that one was an alpha by the way he carried himself, the one accompanying him was an Omega or Beta who likely was more of the Alphas buddy. As they walked their demeanor gave away that much. As the officers told Dusan that he couldn't come any closer he made quick work of informing them that he had been brought in as a consultant on the case, handing them the folded paperwork from out of his jacket and pushing right on to go and look at the dead body.

While most seemed to turn and address him with uncertainty he told them all in fluent Japanese that they should keep doing their jobs and he would stop them if necessary. Strange as it would seem it appeared to be enough for the police who did just that. Protocol being followed or not they went right back to putting down tags as forensics came to examine the body. Dusan had stopped and knelt down beside her to closely examine the injuries sustained. Cause of death seemed to be the cut throat. No hesitation marks meant not suicide. Cut seemed to be deeper below her right ear. That was a fact that Dusan would have to take particular notice of.

The bruising was interesting too. Sadly it could take days to get any information on internal damage. Sweeping his eyes over he drummed his finger just a little on his own thigh. Stopping he stood up straight and began to look around slowly. After a few slow calculated moments it appeared that his eyes locked firmly on Haley even from where she was settled just behind the shipping crates. He turned to start walking in her direction. "Ms I'm going to have to have a word with you."

The police were still processing the scene and Haley took as many pictures as she could to look over later. She may find something that the authorities wouldn't notice. The closure was deserved for the family but all the evidence and stories known so far lined up to it being murder and not suicide. Knowing that the dark-haired woman knew that Mari's family would be able to properly grieve with the knowledge that she didn't harm herself. Someone harmed her intentionally. The only questions that remained were who and why.

Haley noticed that the police had begun to spread out a bit more before walking in the opposite direction. She found this strange, narrowing her eyes in curiosity as she wondered what was the reason for this. At first, she believed they found something else but as she remained perched and waited to make sure, that's when she noticed someone different not wearing a uniform had arrived on the scene. This made her blink in surprise a few times while wondering if extra help had been called in. 'This guy doesn't look like the FBI. They only get involved when it becomes more serious. A consultant maybe,' Haley thought as she took a couple of pictures of him.

Not realizing that she'd lingered too long, she'd been spotted by this man who had the most intimidating expression on her face that sent a chill down her spine and she didn't know why. He wasted no time walking in her direction and she quickly turned off her camera and put it away. She then rose to her feet and started to run. She didn't want to be caught and locked up for being there. It's not as if she was right close to the scene where some of the other reporters were taking pictures and trying to ask questions but having no such luck in getting any answers. Haley would've done that but knew it'd be a waste of time. It was the reason why she stayed back as she did.

It made the risk of getting caught much easier but at least she couldn't be blamed for actually interfering or being in the way. Frantically, Haley began panicking, trying to figure out where she could temporarily hide since her car was way too far to make it to. Many of the police were too distracted with the crime scene itself and keeping the other reporters at bay from getting too close so while they weren't looking, she made a quick break for it towards the hill that led up to the street. 'Crap, crap, crap! I have to hide somewhere! This is not good!' she thought as she climbed her way back up the hill only to end up losing her footing in the process and causing her to fall back.

"Wha!" she screamed aloud.

The girl who had been crouched behind the cargo crates had been of particular interest to Dusan. It wasn't typical for media to be that far away which made her of suspicion. It was possible she had something to do with the murder and had come back to the scene of the crime, or perhaps to try and overhear any leads. As he walked with intention in her direction he saw that she had a camera. She'd certainly snapped more than a few photos and even some of him. He rubbed his lips together before noticing that his addressing of her had sent her into full blown flight. Well there was nothing like a chase.

He started into an open sprint as he tore off along the gravel making a clean leap of the cargo she had been hiding behind. He hadn't gotten a very good look at her face but her outfit would make a game of hide and seek a great deal easier. She was heading for a hill  and the street. That could prove a problem if a vehicle was waiting for her but it turned out that either she was unlucky, nonathletic, or possibly both as she went backwards with a cry and landed on the grassy incline. It took little time for him to close the distance as he called out to her. "Don't move!" His voice had an authority to it that resonated on an almost primal frequency. An unspoken warning that it would be a hundred times worse if she did not comply. He slowed his run as he came up to her. "Who are you and why did you run?"

Having fallen back onto the ground had the raven-haired woman slightly delirious if only briefly. Her glasses had fallen off her face due to the fall which when she attempted to slowly sit up and open her eyes, her vision was blurry. Thankfully, she didn't roll all the way down the hill and end up injuring herself more but that hadn't meant she hadn't felt any pain at all. She did if only minor, which is why she was half out of it despite hearing the guy that was chasing her speak to her in such an authoritative voice. All Haley could do was give the man a confused look from the direction in which his voice came from, all while squinting her eyes, straining hard to see. Doing this had made her head hurt which she clutched in slight pain from the fall and her squinting. "Ow..." she whined softly, rubbing the side of her head lightly.

Dusan let his gaze settle on the girl who now lay rather prone at his feet. It seemed her intention to escape had been thwarted by bad luck or a bought of clumsiness. As she had lost her glasses she seemed to be trying to see through the fog at him. Instinctively he began to dismiss her of his initial suspicion. If she had been the killer she wouldn't be this calm at being apprehended. He eased down and let his left hand take her glasses up from where they had fallen on the ground and half held them out towards her.

"You know they say that a criminal always returns to the scene of a crime. It's also rather suspicious when you run from the authorities."

His tone was almost playful but still carried the intensity with them. While he didn't really believe her to be the killer, the little bit of intimidation was likely to get a better answer at this rate. He also was a little curious to see what hand she used to reach for her glasses with.

Haley had for the most part came back to her senses, realizing that having tried to run to avoid being arrested for being well, a blogger in over her head, had been a bad idea. The chill she'd had earlier returned as she was now caught and stuck having answered to the man she'd taken pictures of earlier as she was trying to figure out just who he was. Being in close proximity of him allowed her to catch a small glint of his scent and it was now starting to don on her where the chill was coming from and why the man had such a serious expression on his face. He was an Alpha. Not that, that was a bad thing but she really didn't want to get on the bad side of an Alpha police consultant or whatever he was. She listened to him grabbing something off the ground which she would assume were her glasses. Hearing him speak to her allowed for her to determine just how close he was to her and she carefully and slowly reached her hand out to feel for her glasses.

Once she'd retrieved them, she quickly put them on, heaving a heavy sigh of relief at being able to see since it wasn't fun squinting and trying to talk to someone that was accusing her of being a suspect to the crime that'd been committed. How she even remotely looked like a criminal was beyond her but she'd gotten arrested for sillier things. This wouldn't be any different. Though being a foreigner, this would make her look rather bad though being detained and unable to get out. The raven-haired woman rose to her feet, brushing the bits of grass off of her clothing then reached into her bag to pull out the camera she was using. "I'm not a criminal. I'm just a freelance blogger trying to get information related to this case. I was only taking pictures from a distance with what I could see. I was trying to avoid being in the way unlike everyone else who's trying to leap cross the police tape for a statement and close up. I'm only interested in wanting to report the truth. To put the family who lost a loved one at ease once the killer has been caught," she explained to him.

Police really disliked reporters. Explaining herself was rather pointless but she meant no harm. She was only trying to report the facts of the case. She may have had some theories regarding who had done it but that's all they were. Theories. There was still a lot of investigative work that needed to be done to uncover everything. "And I was running because I don't want to be detained for, well, being technically a reporter even if an unpaid one," Haley added with a shrug.

Given the way the girl carried herself after being apprehended made Dusan smirk just a bit. He wasn't sure if she was just that unaware or if she really was that strong willed. Taking a few moments he stood with one hand on his hip while watching her as she explained whom she was, or rather what she was. She still hadn't given a name to him but at this point it wouldn't be hard to figure out if she did manage to elude him. A blogger that wasn't pushing in for interviews and photos was different to say the least but she didn't seem to be lying.

A small calculated nod was what she was met with as well as several long moments of silence as he looked at her waiting to see if there was any tell of something she was hiding. Then as suddenly as he had caught up to her he turned and began to walk back in the direction of the crime scene. "Well if you're going to get photos you better come along quick before the cops start moving things." His tone reflected that he seemed to have totally dismissed the idea of her being a guilty party. Inwardly he was hopeful that she would pick up on the hint that she was being given permission across the police tape and check things out.

Haley was expecting to be cuffed and shoved into a police car for running and trespassing. However, she was given quite a surprise when the man turned and began to walk away from her but not before turning partially and giving her the clear to take photos before the police moved everything. 'Wait, so he's not going to arrest me? He's actually going to let me in and do a report? Just ... who is this guy?' she wondered, quickly nodding to catch up with him. She walked beside him but kept a space between as she held onto her camera with both hands while walking back down the hill. "Uh ... thank you for allowing me to take better pictures of everything," she replied awkwardly. "Um, are there any suspect leads if it's okay to ask?" Surely Mari knew a lot of people but they had to be interview to rule them out as suspects. Of course, she wasn't expecting to get close enough to do that by working with the police. If she had to, she'd do it on her own. For now, she'd be satisfied getting better pictures of all the evidence close up.

So the girl had questions about suspects? Well that was no surprise there. honestly just reviewing the case file on the way over had given the agent a list of probable cause killers. The more important question was narrowing it down with -why- she had been murdered. Still a fresh set of eyes would prove interesting. Dusan grew bored with cases that were too open and shut anyways and more often than not that's why he didn't even bother to look into it. But there were details to this murder that made it look much more than a random killing. The disappearance of her mate prior to her murder being the first red flag. "Victim is Mari Takanawa. Mate of Osada Takanawa who went missing a week ago. She's daughter to Amane and Hirose Soesetzu with no children to speak of." He put his hands idly into his pant pockets leaving the thumb to ride on the belt around his waist.

"Victim was found washed ashore with cause of death being a cut throat. Police want to list it as a robbery gone wrong given she seems to have been stripped of her jewelry and wallet or purse."

Really that's where Dusan thought this was quite wrong. As he lifted the police tape to let Haley into the crime scene he took another glance around, seeming to be scanning the area more than the actual dead body. "Personally I think they're wrong. The injury isn't angled and short to be a front cut. Also most muggers would stab before they'd take a swing at someones throat. She was clearly cut from behind. Also if she was killed on the docks or in this area, then dumping the body into the water from here would do little to nothing to hide it. So here's the important question. Why kill the mate of an already missing man?"

Haley wasted no time pulling out a her notebook and pen to write all the extra details down about the case that she didn't have. She was still surprised that she was allowed to get this close in order to determine the killer and the reason behind murdering an innocent woman. She didn't appear to be a bad person but if there was one thing the woman learned through her line of work was to never assume the victim is a good person. That doesn't mean they deserve to die but rather understand the true motives behind someone's actions even if those actions are wrong. Once they reached the police tape, she stopped writing to slip under it as the tall Alpha had held it up for her. She then lightly tapped her pen against her cheek to ponder and answer to the Alpha's question. "I had not known that her mate was missing to begin with. It raises a whole new set of questions, making one wonder if the missing mate is alive or not. If they are, why are they hiding? From the beginning, nothing about this case sits well with me. It'd help to know more about who Mari was as a person to determine if she had enemies that would lead them to killing her. I am hoping that this isn't some terrible lovers quarrel thing going on but I'm keeping my mind open to other possibilities," Haley said. "Oh by the way, what's your name?" she asked him. It isn't common that she would forget to ask someone their name but she did think she was going to be arrested for creeping from a distance so it was more of an after thought.

Dusan hadn't really been turning his attention to Haley as he spoke but he did glance out of his peripheral vision from time to time. If there was one thing that was important it was staying on high alert. Really he knew the killer wasn't here but it didn't mean someone associated with the killer couldn't be among the throngs of reporters. and onlookers. Honestly Dusan already had some theories forming in his mind as to the situation but nothing would be concrete until they could exactly find the person or persons responsible. "A lovers quarrel? Your instincts might not be too far off the mark. It's easy for people to imagine this to be a mugging given the location of the body, but the cut is clean. That means either the killer is extremely skilled with an incredibly sharp knife or someone was able to calmly approach behind her without any resistance. Can you think of anyone who would be out in the middle of the night in a place like this calmly walking along?"

He bent down and looked at the body once again now examining the wrists. "No markings to indicate restraints were used. No. She felt safe with whomever she was with when this happened and they likely came and dumped her body here."

As she asked him what his name was he had a second for consideration. Really he didn't just give his name out in the event of something being linked back to him. Although most would probably be unable to track him he thought it might be best for her safety if he just lied with the alias he sometimes had to work under. On the other hand, there was something fun to be had in keeping his new companion on her toes. "What? Bright girl like you can't deduct my name? I would figure a girl like you would like solving mysteries. Until you figure it out you can call me Casimir."

Being closer toward the scene of the crime, Haley was able to take better pictures of the area as well as the body. She only could get so few pictures of the body from where she was hiding earlier, so she was glad this man allowed her to get close enough to see everything. The dark-haired woman hoped to be of some help as well. The Alpha seemed receptive to her answer regarding the reasons behind Mari's death and what led up to it. She was never this lucky to be this closely involved in an investigation. Not all of her stories involved a murder but if she could help Crack the case and get a killer off the street, it'd make her feel better knowing she did some good and bring closure to Mari's family.

She watched as the raven-haired Alpha examined Mari's body, she, standing there taking pictures as he did this while stating that the woman clearly was with someone she believed wouldn't be of any danger to her. It made sense as the marks on the body weren't savagely gruesome. And it was obvious from the start that she was dumped and washed ashore by the docks. Haley couldn't help but think about where the original crime scene was. 'It has to be somewhere close by where there's water. I wonder how far the shoreline stretches to the other side and where it leads to,' she thought, lowering her camera.

Haley was going to speak on that topic next until he'd finally answered her earlier question about what his name was but his response felt a little condescending, not to mention, the name he gave her was obviously fake. All she could do was roll her eyes. "Okay, so we're going in that direction," Haley replied sarcastically. If he was assisting the police, why did he feel the need to give her a fake name? She had no intention of slandering him but she technically was still considered a reporter so she had to keep that in mind. Since he gave her a fake name, she decided to do the same. "You may call me Anne," she told him.

It seemed that his bout of wit hadn't quite gone as intended. Despite the commentary actually having been meant as a compliment for her perceptive nature she didn't seem very happy for it. While he understood her own barb by using an equally fake name his face returned to one of cold warning. "Ms Anne, perhaps I need to establish a few things before this continues further." His tone and eyes gave no malicious intent but he did seem to be giving her a cautionary message. "I don't work well in groups. I am not what you would call a team player. I move at a pace that most don't keep up with. I'm not talking physically, I'm talking mentally. If I felt like giving you access to a crime scene that other reporters aren't being allowed into and if I'm saying you're clever then that's a compliment."

He took his gaze off of her and turned around to start walking into the water as it lapped along the shore. He never really cared if he got his feet or pants legs wet. In some humerus ways the way he walked out into the water made it almost appear as if his intention was to just disappear off into the ocean. "As for the name you can consider it a game. A sort of secondary brain teaser while we solve this murder. If you figure out my name then I'll give you a prize."

He stopped his walking and tried to look along the shore line in the same general direction she had been looking. "If her body washed ashore here then that means it couldn't have been dumped in the water from too far away. That means she was either already here in the docs or near by when she was murdered or it means her body was brought here and dumped." He turned around to look at 'Anne'. "If you went to the trouble of murdering someone and took all their belongings to make it look like a robbery, why would you relocate a body to here?"

"I mean, you could've just said that instead of telling a bad joke and giving me a fake name," Haley said with a shrug. It's not as if she wouldn't have understood that. She was a stranger so it made sense that the demeanor he gave off was similar to that of the police in some aspects. Police work with other police but preferred not to work with other branches that did the same work. It was a weird pride thing that Haley never understood. As for herself, it didn't matter if she worked with someone or alone when it came to gathering information to formulate a truthful story. The end goal was to uncover the truth and sometimes one had to work with terrible people just to do that.

Not that she found the Alpha to be a terrible person. Bad at telling jokes and of course, it being obvious he didn't work well with others. Outside of those two things, he was a mystery to her. She wasn't even sure if she could call him by that hilarious fake name but seeing as how he addressed her by the one she gave him, it was only fair. She was also surprised by him admitting to giving her a compliment which was rather difficult to pick up but he gave one so she was satisfied with that. It was currently uncertain at this point where the investigation of Mari's death would lead them. That being said, it was better this way for the time being. Just in case the killer was lurking nearby pretending to be a concerned bystander reading lips or listening in.

"The compliment is appreciated, sir. Though I hadn't done much to earn it other than giving estimated guesses. The one I thought of a moment ago was about the shoreline to the dock. She was dumped since no blood around here indicates the murder took place in this area. That raises the question of the shoreline from here and across to neighboring areas of the city near bodies of water. Searching the areas closest to the water would help to determine where she was specifically killed," she suggested. She didn't know how much manpower they had to do that but it was a start somewhere.

Though she didn't think he'd been listening to her since he'd walked off and toward the shoreline itself before stopping. Looking back at her, he spoke and yet again told another corny joke, making her sweatdrop. Haley didn't know whether to be annoyed or just nervous being around this man. He gave off the oddest of vibes. If this was also his way of trying to lighten the mood to where it wasn't serious entirely, in the current position they were in, just seemed inappropriate. If they weren't near the body and crime scene actually discussing the case, it would be. Instead of getting offended or annoyed, Haley just sighed, proceeding to walk closer toward the Alpha but stopping to keep distance between them.

She only got closer so she wouldn't feel like she was shouting what she wanted to say across the way for people to hear. "Another question raised. She floated to the shore with nothing on her but what she wore. So, it does seem strange for her to not have her things unless as you said, someone took them to avoid having her be identified."
