The only time students had limited use of the library was during summer school for students who fell into two categories: those who fell behind unintentionally due to circumstances out of their control, or those who were lazy and didn't feel like they needed to do their work and score high enough to not need summer school classes. Akasha didn't need to take summer classes, thankfully. Neither did her younger sister Athena. She wasn't a genius, but that hadn't meant she was going to slack on her schoolwork and make poor grades because ... reasons. That, and she hadn't wanted Athena getting on her case about it, as she does with everything else the brunette did. She wished her sister would go out and have some fun like others her age. She didn't have to waste her teenage years worrying about her. Akasha could handle things herself for the most part and didn't need a caretaker like she was an invalid. Sure, there were some things she still couldn't do because she was confined to a wheelchair, and she would ask for help when she needed it. But that's only when she needed it. Outside of that, Akasha did her own thing while Athena looked as if she was pulling her hair out, figuratively trying to get her to understand how different her circumstances were, like she wasn't already aware of that. Even as summer had come and gone and school was back in session, her sister did nothing but stay home and either study for the current semester or attempt to take care of her. Akasha appreciated her sister's help. It's not as if she didn't, but she hadn't wanted her sister to give up everything just to care for her. It was why she worked hard on her upper body and arm strength to use whenever she needed it. Her legs still had no movement, no possible hope to ever walk again, and she accepted that. Akasha didn't want to be reminded of it. She was fine. And she enjoyed school and the friends she did have. Sure, some idiotic students looked down on her because she was wheelchair bound, but she never allowed it to get to her. If anything, she'd just roast them back if she had a good one in the chamber, and it usually made them walk away and regret their life choices. Bottom line, she couldn't stop anyone from mocking her for something she couldn't control. Whether that was because she was wheelchair bound or she was a Beta. They were usually either Alphas trying to assert their dominance or upper-class Omegas and sometimes other Betas that would also mock her. It wasn't just one type of person or one type of group. It was everyone. Yes, Akasha didn't like it, but she refused to sit around and be a victim about it. If anything, she wanted to be an example of making something out of the situation one is in. She'd rather it be a good thing that's beneficial for everyone rather than creating problems. And because she wasn't the victim that others expected her to be, it bothered them. She didn't know why. It was weird to her. Why should she feel sorry about her situation? If she could change it and have the opportunity to walk again, she would. Money was the only thing stopping her, but she was saving up the money she made from her part-time job for that reason. Akasha was a problem solver, not an attention seeker. That's how it's always been with her. No one would catch her feeling down about anything, and she was normally seen wearing a smile on her face. Even now, she was feeling happy despite whatever remarks she heard today about her. Plus, she just wanted to go to the library and check out a couple of books like she always did. She had two books with her that she slipped into the returned books slot at the front of the library where she came in. It was currently lunchtime for first period students, whereas Akasha had a free period, then one class before second period lunch, and she was taking advantage of it. It was cool inside, whereas outside it was so hot, it felt like someone was blowing their hot breath all over her. She had a bottle of Gatorade and water with her. She had to make sure she stayed hydrated. She couldn't wait for it to eventually cool down, and when it did, the entire city would be covered in snow for a while. It always looked beautiful when it was like that. Something she enjoyed taking pictures of. So, she couldn't wait for that time to come. In careful movements, she wheeled herself toward a section of the library for romance novels. She was desiring something different to read that was interesting, but it was hard when it came to romance, which was anything but a fairy tale. She took down a couple of books, read their summary and put them back. "Hrm, this section is pretty much the same. Looking for something different," Akasha mumbled to herself as she continued moving her wheelchair down the aisle she was on. Eventually, she ended up somehow in the murder mystery area. This was Athena's interest. It was fine and all, but she felt that her sister was taking the stories she read to be too literal. Some of them were based on real-life events, but not ALL of them. She couldn't help but think that's why her sister was always warning her of the dangers that were everywhere, apparently. Danger was everywhere, but she wasn't going to sit around and be paranoid about them about going outside. Akasha's friends thought Athena was strange. She didn't disagree, but she didn't encourage them to keep saying that about her sister. Instead, she just wanted them to know that her sister was just scared and needed help to get out of that mindset of fear. She hoped they would be friends with her. Akasha tried, but it never worked. Athena always stayed to herself and pushed anyone away. Akasha hated seeing her sister lonely. Sure, they talked to each other, but they couldn't relate to one another on a lot of things, and it usually would end with Athena getting frustrated with her. Looking at the shelf of murder mystery novels, she recognized a couple of the authors, but not the books they wrote. She wondered if Athena had read them already. "Well, even if I can't find anything good, at least I've found something for her to read. It usually takes her three days to read a book when she's really into it," Akasha said, taking two books down off the shelf in front of her that was within arm's reach and sitting them in her lap. Not wanting to stay in this section too long, she carefully tried to back her chair up but felt someone bumping against her from behind. "Oh crap!" she exclaimed as she looked behind her while holding her wheels in place. "My bad about that. You good? I didn't hear you behind me." She smiled as she apologized to the person behind her.
