A Careless Mistake (Open)
« on: April 16, 2021, 01:37:13 am »

A flash of blonde was the only warning any other lingering students got as Vala whipped around a corner and vaulted up the stairs two at a time.  Anyone unfortunate enough to be close to her path got a shouted, “sorry!” while she disappeared down another hallway without a moment’s hesitation.  One would think, having watched the spectacle in person, that it was impossible for her to see anything at the pace she was moving.  One would be wrong, Vala's eyes were more trained on the ground than what was in front of her; which really, was a miracle, since during normal school hours the halls would have been packed.  It had been almost an hour since the main daytime classes had ended; and those that remained were likely in their own classes by now and not out wandering the hall.

Any sane person might ask; what on earth the teenager was doing, treating the hall like some form of sports field?  If they asked Vala, her reply would have been a rather dramatic panic attack over the loss of something vital.  That something was her main notebook, it had two months of work from all her classes in it, and it was -as of current- missing.

Before these past few minutes, Vala's day had actually been rather uneventful.  She's woken up, made breakfast for her and her father, caught the train on time, and made it through all her classes without any hiccups.  She had stayed a little late after her microbiology class in order to ask some questions pertaining to a paper that was due next week; but time quickly ran out before she had to leave, lest she end up late for her next class.  It was fine.  She agreed to return after her classes were done for the day and they could finish the discussion then.  So, instead of packing up her belongings responsibly -like she should have- when class was over; Vala gathered everything under her arm and made her way back to her science classroom.  The decision cost her.  A fatal mistake.  Okay, maybe not fatal since she was very much still alive; though if she didn't get her notes back it might become debatable.

You see, unbeknownst to her, the precious notebook had slid from under the grasp of her prosthetic arm; and she didn't feel a thing.  It wasn't until forty minutes into talking with her Sensei that she finally decided to put everything back in her bag and realized it was missing; and even then it wasn't as though she could interrupt them and bolt out right away.  No, it was another 10 minutes of slowly creeping panic before she was able to thank her teacher and excuse herself.

Which is what brought her here, retracing her steps in an attempt to find the key to her future at University.  She finally slowed once she reached the halls approaching her English class, looking more carefully now along the edges of the floor in case it was accidentally kicked behind a trash can.  Really, she was a bit of a mess.  Her blond hair had tangled into the straps of her bag, since she'd been too busy to fix it when she began her quest; and her violet eyes belayed her nerves.  Careless.  Careless, careless, careless...  What an idiotic thing to do, and one that could have been easily prevented had she just taken an extra moment to put away her things.  If she managed to recover her notes, she swore to every deity listening that she would never make such a mistake again... and then reminded herself (and any eavesdropping gods) that she was liable to make many other, different, mistakes... just so they wouldn't hold it against her.
