Blank Space (Suzu)
« on: June 10, 2022, 12:39:20 am »
He couldn't believe it; five grueling months, all Ayato could think at night was how he missed home, how he missed Suzuku. There were times they'd just lay there together and stare at each other. He'd place a hand on the side of her face, brushing over her cheek; it brought him warmth, comfort, some sense in a world that made none; in a world that wanted him dead. She was his only way of hope in this hellhole... well, that hell. As much as he tried to recreate that warmth, that light, it always vanished from his grasp. Leaving him alone in that dark, cold apartment. Every night, Ayato struggled to keep himself together, hell, at first he couldn't even sleep. But... as he learned more about where the hell he was, the less painful it was. He couldn't get her out of his mind, there wasn't a minute he didn't stop thinking about her. All the Nakamura wanted was to go back in time, and relive the moments he had with her and only her. But, he couldn't, he didn't know how to nor did he know what to do with his life now. The reason he had for even trying so hard to live, it was gone. No... He was gone from her, and there was nothing he feared more... besides her death. Now, he couldn't keep his word, he couldn't forgive himself.

That night, like every other night, the man cried himself to sleep in silence. A pain in his chest, a void in his heart that he didn't know how to close. Hours passed like minutes as, like every night before, he dreamt of being with her, stroking her hair, staring into those golden hues, whispering sweet nothings until he got a smile from her. Leaning in to kiss her, Ayato closed his eyes, only to see an alarm blaring and the lack of Suzuku. Ayato felt devoid of life, his life was colorless without her... yeah, it was better than fearing that any moment could be his last... but this, it was a special kind of hell that he just had to tread through and hope for a miracle. Pulling himself out of bed, the man turned off his early as hell alarm. Letting out a sigh that was soul-crushing in itself, he walked himself to take a shower and start this wake-up routine. Minutes later, drying himself off with a towel, the man slid on his work clothes for another long day. It was what the Kuronmeru would have wanted, for him to at least try to live a normal life. He started only to stop and fail there... at least here, he could keep some semblance of a promise.

After the clothes, all that mattered was the teeth and hair, he usually had breakfast at the cafe, that was his new normal now. Well, he had to accept so much as his new normal now. The scents were easily the worst to get used to. He had a drive when it came to Suzuku, here... it was seemingly on a cycle and there were many who tried to entice him. He'd lose himself, get so dangerously close to forgetting about her, but he'd always catch himself last minute, he didn't even need to activate Shinobutō to push them away - sometimes more violently than he should - it activated like a defense mechanism. Due to this cruel introduction to scent, he retrofitted his old mask to act as what is known as a 'Muzzle'. It was weird he had to wear one, but it was even weirder that it was normal for some individuals. The use of these 'muzzles' was exactly what he had figured out. He felt like he was reinventing the wheel here, but the knowledge of Muzzles helped a lot when it came to Ruts. It felt akin to losing his mind, giving in to his inner, darkest desires. It hurt like hell the first few cycles, it was something he didn't care for nor want but it was like he was compelled to mate even more with any woman that caught his attention.

Especially at work with a variety of people coming all over, he made sure to keep it on his person at all times. He rather liked his job, sure, making drinks all day was not the most illustrious thing to do, but it calmed him. Once the basic hygiene was done, he jogged his way to the Central District his workplace was located. There were cars about and while they interested Ayato, he heard you needed some kind of license to get them. He didn't need that kind of expense, he was already at odds getting used to everything, throwing in optional things would only bring panic. Arriving at his workplace, he was pleasantly surprised to open an unlocked door. "Kazu-san... morning, nice to see you opened for once." A deflated but sarcastic remark was thrown. "Ayato-san, you still can make that sarcasm even when you sound like someone shot your dog in front of you? Are you ever going to, ya'know, cheer up?" The Nakamura looked down to the floor before walking over to his station. "I... I hope so... Let's just get through this day." Ayato leaned against the table just in front of the sink. Hands pressed against the edge as fingers tapped against the wood underneath.

Not every person was overcome with such stress and powerlessness for their situation, even when things weren’t going as was particularly ‘pleased’ or ‘wanted,’ it was just life as it went.  Smooth and contual like a flowing river; sometimes rapids and sometimes tranquil…

The evening previous had been a long night in the hospital, extra doses had come in late and medications needed prepared for the coming morning that had been missing up until that point.  Sometimes supply and demand was an issue, sometimes they screwed up the order… but come as it may, everything turned out fine.  A few extra hours, an overnight stay, and the pharmacy at the hospital was running as smoothly as ever.

Not with her there today though.  Her overnight shift was fine enough, so she hung up her pristine white coat and was out the door seeking long deserved rest.  Attire beneath that coat was always rather odd, ornate and lovely but exceedingly odd for anything someone might consider ‘normal.’   Her heart and mind paid no thought towards it though, for as long as she fulfilled her duties no one much seemed to say anything to her.  Hair let down from a tight bun, long silvery hairs flowing in a much looser and full braid down the length of her back.

A lovely woman, but there were many lovely people upon this earth.  All with their own genders, scents, preferences, looks… A complicated world, but the only one she knew.  Even tugs at her soul wouldnt’ have hinted towards the existence of anything else, and so Suzu had built herself into who she was.

Temporary work wasn’t for everyone and her work as a Pharmacist was far from what she wanted to do… but every day had its own little hurdles, this one barely began yet she’d find it to be the end of hers.  A Cafe not far, or at least not far when she roamed and meandered around with her mind afloat, she’d step into the little establishment in those bright morning hours, hand gingerly against the door, pushing it open, and heels clicking lightly against the floor as she made her way in.

Smooth movements carried her, a posture clean and defined held her tall, to stop in front of the counter and one hand settled atop it, fingertips softly pressed to the top.

“White Russian.”

The words smooth and easily floating, though with a straight firmness to it that made it at least known she wasn’t asking if that was okay.  She knew what time it was… and that’s what she wanted.

Covering his yawn with the bend of his arm, Ayato flipped the switches needed to start the coffee machines. Turning on the tea blenders and setting them on standby, the man looked at the ice colors holding select liquors that are commonly requested; setting the temperature to chill rather than so cold it's almost frozen preservation. "Have you done inve-" "Have you counted and balanced the registers?" The Nakamura cut Kazu off with both equally time-consuming tasks. The silence between the two rose as Ayato grabbed the clipboard and turned to a new page. "We got ten." "Relax, we'll be done in time.... When is Ka-... Kats-... Ka-Su-Rin in?" "With all due respect Ayato, how the fuck did you graduate and not know Katakana? 'Kathrine' is going to be a hour late, dropping her kid off early at school." Ayato audibly sighed as he continued walking side to side, checking off liquor and marking the quantities on the shelf. "Need the cheat... well, binder?" "Just maybe have it on standby? I don't think will be that busy." "Exactly why I suggested it." Ayato couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, as much as he couldn't stand Kazu, that honestly made him smile.

Ayato heard the register ding and the second after that, the third wasn't prepared. "Remember your POS can access all three areas, coffee and tea, alcohol, and din-" "Kazu, I've been out of training a few weeks now. I got it." "Just making sure, espresso depresso." The white-haired man threw on a forced, easily pained expression. Returning to his leaning counter after handing the checklist to the back of the house, Ayato covered another yawn as two brunettes showed up at his register. Frappuccinos, chai lattes, straight black coffee, Irish Coffees, Mimosas, Rum and Cokes, Sake Grapefruit cocktails, Tokyo Mules, Raspberry Sake Teas, drink after drink, tea after coffee after alcohol after some weird combination. The Nakamura honestly broke a small sweat walking back and forth shaking and preparing multiple drinks in tandem. The early riser/worker rush was just about over and Ayato sighed. He took a step back before seeing a black-haired woman in a black and white dress pass the Cafe outside. Hmm... Suzuk- Ayato stopped himself before putting head against his hand.

Ah, I just can't... let... her... go. Ayato looked back up to see another woman come to the counter. Now she knew who she was. Her confidence just said this was her Cafe and while she didn't look like Suzuku, she dressed in a similar fashion and it sent a chill down his spine. The ornate dress was definitely an exotic sight, especially in the Central district, well, not so much the Ganza Strip. He's seen both beautiful and raunchy things there and he still doesn't know whether to be terrified or permanently suppress it. Either way, this white-haired woman enchanted Ayato. It could be do to his building frustration or it could be getting close to that time. He doesn't particularly know, Ayato was usually to keep track of work days, let alone days important to his new physiology. The words slipped off her tongue clear to his ears, however, his eyes still had to dart to remember. White Russian... Kahlua... Vodka... eh... 1 to 2? The white-haired male placed the serving glass in the ice cooler. Taking out a bottle of premium vodka, he took out a third mixing glass and placed it in front of the woman. "Don't suppose you come out this way often." Idle chatter, it was something he got used to, whether it was making coffee, preparing tea, or a cocktail, though he has been told a lot that he talks too much when he really has something to say.

Pouring in two ounces of the vodka, the Nakamura tossed the bottle of vodka in the air, catching it with his left hand and putting it in a free spot as his right hand dug out a bottle of Kahlua. Back at the mixing glass, he poured the liquid in. "I don't think I've met anyone with similar hair and eye color... You are definitely killing it with that beautiful dress." Putting away the bottles, he grabbed a pair of tongs before plucking 3 large ice cubes into the glass. He let the compliment sit in as he used a large bar spoon to mix the drink together. "Don't go, gonna miss the best part." Ayato walked to grab the chilled glass as he carefully placed it in front of the woman. He was rarely aware of it, but Kazu definitely froze at the register and looked around. Gasoline. The smell wasn't as overbearing as iron but a hint of it still vented weakly into the air. The Nakamura was never the best at holding his scent back, even harder when he felt a sort of attraction, even lust. The scent gland was new to him, controlling it was still new to him. While he was just casually venting, he continued to add a premium ice cube to the chilled glass as well as strain the mixed drink from the mixing glass to the chilled serving glass.

Taking out a vanilla heavy creamer, he topped off the drink with a few swirls, purposely staring at the woman's eyes as he added the final touch. He didn't know if the woman liked any derivatives to her White Russian but he added a small garnish of nutmeg. "Drinks on me, if you don't like the nutmeg, I'll serve you the classic same time tomorrow?" The man smiled and winked at the woman as he stood back looking at the drink he made and at the woman and back.

A simple order, confidently spoken, she had no hesitation in what she wanted and upon seeing what the cafe offered, she planned to get it.  Simple as that.  What she didn’t quite ask for was conversation.  It wasn’t a bar, but a cafe.  The one mixing drinks and coffee should have been busy, no?   But there he was, turning her way and setting the drink before her to prepare as he made idle chitchat.

“I suppose not really.”

A confirmation that this probably wasn’t on her normal set of stops… not that it was bad or purposeful, but it just didn’t happen to be within her normal routine.  Granted, few things really were. Her job had set hours that varied from day to day, but her route to and from there was something that changed constantly.  It assisted in her seeing more of the world, rooting out fear, and generally finding more fulfilment in life.

Compliments paid her way though, something… perhaps not abnormal?  Though she wouldn’t have said she often had herself in such situations to gain them.  In the hospital she wasn’t always readily seen, and when she was?  People were getting medication for their loved ones or themselves, not the ideal place to show herself off or gain positive attention.

She wasn’t one for that anyway, a nod came from the woman in response as if understanding how odd she must seem.  Granted… there were many types of people and vastly different and beautiful ones…  “My appearance wasn’t always this way.  One could say that I’ve endured vast spiritual training to become more… pure?  Sated?  Serene is perhaps a good term.

But I thank you.”

Explaining her looks were different at one point and then explaining some oddity about her… Maybe she was a crazy woman afterall, but she looked just as serious and uncaring as when she had entered.  A neutral sort of self to her, one that spoke those things blankly.  A pause as well, followed by her thanks towards what was more obviously a compliment.

And even a chuckle his way.  His presentation while getting the drink had been expected up until he ‘begged’ her not to go.  It was amusing in its own little way, the woman resting her arm to the bar, elbow against it and cheek leaned into her hand with a stray finger just barely pressed to her lips.  She must watch the best part.

A finish off to the drink, though the part that caught her attention most was how he stared at her rather than the glass.  Working hands and easy gaze, captivated by her somehow?  It had a brow subtly raise, wondering if he were being like this on purpose.  Faint smell of gasoline in the air wasn’t something she connected at first, the scent of such a familiar smell only subconsciously drawing her attention as he finished off that drink.

All to come to her when he gave his request.  See her again?  Pay for her drink?  A slight lean in closer to him as hand would fall from her face and reach for that chilled glass was more to confirm that scent grew stronger as she moved closer to him.   Was it his time?  Though it was subtle… and he didn’t appear distraught at all?

“You’ll make no money with offers like those.”

Drawing back away from the counter, her hand circling the chilled glass and lifting it to her lips, a slow sip taken as the pale eyes remained locked on that odd young lad.

“The aroma of the air suggests you may be busy in the coming days.  Unless you seek a mate?  To which I can assure you I am not suitable for such things.”

More blunt than she possibly should have been.  He may not have even been coming onto her with that idea.  Maybe it was just a faint scent from behind the counter rather than himself.

Suzu couldnt’ have said she cared though.  What did it matter if she were totally wrong?

Preparing the drink, he let his hands run on auto pilot, but he was definitely trying to feel the blank space with a little something, only when they sat near the counter did he get a chance to talk. Usually, Kathrine took the drinks and food orders out to the people. It helped divide the work and allowed them to serve in a cohesive manner. Was it a little odd? Not really. Despite the job application saying they needed to do everything on their own, the work environment made it easier to balance out the work over a team. It's not the fact they weren't incapable of doing everything but it definitely expedited the work. It was usually the mornings and late evenings that the team was more necessary as most the college student-workers were more available during the day. That usually gave him a split shift since you needed to be a certain age to serve alcohol which definitely almost didn't matter where he came from. Alas, the man didn't talk about it much, no one would really understand him.

TV shows and movies had people disappearing to places he had come from, it was the old-time legends that saw the opposite, something about relating to the audience. This woman confirmed that she in fact did not come out this way often. It was a pleasant surprise to him that she choose his shift to come out here, the high schoolers and college group would probably pester her more. Compliments made her way as he was mostly focused on making the drink, but the woman had a definite appeal about her that made it so much easier to lose a bit of focus. Not enough for him to stop as there were more drinks to prepare but the Nakamura was willing to take his time for this interaction. She had a rather insightful answer in regards to her appearance, she didn't always look this way and attributed it to 'spiritual training.' It definitely pinged his mind back in time to certain individuals that claimed something similar. He wondered if maybe there was a connection between worlds, he didn't hang on to that thought though. Even if they were similar, he was mostly sure it was not the same. After all, his physiology changed so maybe what he was used to just didn't exist in this world. She thanked him and that just either made his day or remember a feeling he had longed for.

He got a chuckle out of her which was a part of why he enjoyed when they came up to the counter, talking was nice but not only was his goal to serve drinks but also to ensure customer enjoyment, although he was guilty of taking it far more important than what it should be. Call it being a people-pleaser, a guilty pleasure, or something to just cope with being down all the time. Each was kind of correct in his own way, life was certainly easier now that he wasn't watching his back, he had more time to enjoy the smaller things. He had the chance to do so before that unfortunate series of events but he wished it could have been longer. Once the drink was ready, he watched as the woman seemed to adjust herself to grab her drink after stating he wouldn't make money with offers such as the one he pitched to which he gave a nod of acknowledgment. He looked to the side and brought his hand to the POS, tabbing it over to see a new order has been made. Blended caramel coffee?... The man took out a pitcher and reached into the mini-fridge behind him. Taking out some milk and premade coffee mix. Pouring a pint of both in it with a few chucks of ice. Sealing the pitcher, he placed it in a tight blender with a cover, closing it before putting it at a deep blend before returning the contents back in the mini-fridge.

His attention was back on the woman as he once again tabbed over to her order of a White Russian, a small smile formed on his lips when she mentioned the aroma. "Don't worry about it... barista/barkeep secret, I uh, don't really know how to stop it from venting so yeah, I always assume people that come here already found that special someone, so I really try to take every precaution I can. I can't afford to miss work." He pulled at the cloth around his neck to show a muzzle in a very subtle fashion. "Will that complete your order or may I prepare another drink for you?" Ayato inputed characters to add to the receipt before saving it and tabbing back over to the order of coffee. He returned to the blender and stopped it, opening the lid and taking it out before grabbing a large cup, pouring some of the drink, injecting it with caramel syrup before adding more of the blended drink and topping it off. A stirring stick was trapped as he placed the empty pitcher in the sink. Upon stirring the drink, and printing the label, the man sealed it with the lid before using the label to tape a straw to the drink.

"Tsume-san!" He yelled as he placed the cup on a pickup counter space on the other side of his POS and dismissed that drink, tabbing back over to the woman's alcohol order. He turned to the white hairred vixen and flashed a smile.

The man was rather unconcerned, wasn’t he?   Not that Suzu could claim that she was particularly worried about him either.  The mention of pay didn’t have him batting an eye, just returning to work.  And she herself?  It’s not like she turned down the offer… Those cards could fall as they may.  Him returning to work had her lifting her drink to sip at, slowly savoring and thinking.  A peaceful morning after a tiring evening was enough.

He wasn’t done with her yet though.  Back to her own order and focused on her, the mention of the aroma and the forever longing for a mate answered rather easily.  She hadn’t really caught him off guard nor even made him pause, the man simply rolling right along with it.  Apparently it wasn’t any embarrassment to him that he couldn’t control himself, or perhaps it was a clever ploy to try and lasso in someone much more naive than herself.

“I find it rather silly to make that assumption.  It seems as if you’re trying to lead me around.”

Drink in hand and soft sway to swirl the contents about, coffee and cream softly blended further as pale eyes were settled upon that man.  Back and forth his words swayed like the ocean tide…  To that, he almost seemed to dismiss her again.  More back and forth.  Suzu wasn’t so bold as to say it was ‘interesting’ to her, but he kept her attention to whatever degree he wanted it.  Off he went though, making his other orders and moving about while she sipped at hers.  A pleasant morning altogether even as the effects of the evening wore on her.  Coffee helped, at least.

And just like that, he was back again.   Smiling, obviously focused on her, and the woman in turn softly setting down her glass and shaking her head.  “You offer free service then mention needing the work.  Say you expect everyone is taken, yet can’t control your own scent.  Should you not be embarrassed by your finickiness?”

It was somewhat in jest at least, though her tone of voice would have remained even and smooth with only the softest hints of amusement.  Fingers parted from her drink though, moving higher on her arm to tug down that fingerless glove.  Down slender arm, pale flesh revealed, and while it wasn’t for the reason of any sort of scent barrier, the glove was removed and her hand lifted.  Wrist out to him.

“Would you like a scent of subtlety?  It might do you well.”

If he were subtle, that is.  If he would take some ounce of that subtlety and apply it to himself.  But wrist was lifted all the same, her own scent only lingering on her skin.  For she wasn’t on any precipice of heat.  Nor did she lack control of herself…

The man found no bother with the work, but he let out a gentle sigh as he saw another ping on his register. "We aren't that busy Kazu, I'm sure no one would mind if you turned the drip on." Ayato said, warmly and sarcastically as he gestured to the drink he was making for the Tsume customer to him. The man was ever listening throughout the action. She found making that assumption was silly as if he was trying to lead her around. After Tsume's drink was announced, Ayato was more than happy to look back at his white-haired customer. A follow-up to her prior comment was what sounded like her trying to figure out the man. "I've been through... quite a lot of things, finickiness and embarrassment is the least of my worries, upsetting my customers, letting people down, those are my concerns." Ayato answered honestly. It didn't seem like a proper question, more a rhetorical one but still one he answered with a smile, albeit, a soft one. Eyes remained on her as she tugged down on her fingerless glove. Ayato watched as more of her pale skin was shown and it caused a slight rapidness of beats, locking his attention even more. There was a first for everything but this wasn't it, he knew how to handle it a bit. Even though this woman had a unique allure to her that made his head rush just a little more. "I would absolutely love to be more subtle, if you may demonstrate, I'd appreciate it." The subtle release of her scent pulled him closer to the counter as he closed his eyes and took a quiet inhale.

Upon opening his eyes, he gulped as he went to print the receipt, while he still was focused his eyes were a bit enchanted by what he experienced. Ayato quietly inhaled more of the woman's scent, feeling a carnal pull yet he forced himself to remain professional. "This is just a preview receipt, not the real thing in case you want to order more. Some regulars who come here and sit exactly where you are enjoy this option. Below the order total, just right here above where you would right a signature is a number to my work cell. Say you come in the cafe and I'm not in and one of our college workers is. Of those regulars, they enjoy I prepare their drinks so they call and ask if I'm available to come in and prepare it. Management likes the extra hands on deck so I am able to come in and prepare the drinks my style, that is why I asked if you'd like the classic next order, nutmeg isn't an original ingredient and a professional twist of mine." Ayato pointed the sections of the receipt out. Her scent, it was sweet, so much, yet, he felt calm around her, well besides a small carnal desire. He felt a slight change, a pullback of his own venting, it was only slight and what had permeated the air still lingered, it was just less potent than earlier. "I would love it if someone can teach me just how to fully control it, alas, it is no one's responsibility but my own." The man stated as he tossed the preview receipt in the trash, waiting to input her next order.

The side door opened with a jingle, "Morning, Kat! The rush hasn't started, yet, I think... Kazu-san, verify!" If the woman had no other order, he'd print out the receipt and hand it to the woman, "Melody Cafe delivers thanks and welcomes all customers to come again. Have a great day!" Ayato stated a repeated and rehearsed line that was mandatory for customer-facing orders and/or serving the dining area. He really didn't want to see the woman go, and he was rather hoping she'd decide to come back, but that decision was always the customer. Behind the smile, he was already dreading the rest of the day and the coming night. He couldn't just get Suzuku out of his mind, it wasn't fair he was taken away from her so abruptly, he prayed everyday he'd find a way back to her or she to him.
