New Digs (Haley)
« on: December 16, 2022, 10:44:41 pm »
The murder investigation had taken a few days but had ultimately proven to be an exciting escape from the boredom of mediocratic running of SPIRIT which could sometimes happen. It was why Dusan had a tendency to leave Claire to handle it unless something truly terrible reared it's ugly head that needed that 'old sledge hammer' approach. He preferred the criminal investigations. In many ways he got a small thrill out of bringing one down the same as he had about his father. It was a secret thrill that he could never share but experienced none the less. It had been rather easy to figure out for him from the get go, the trouble was just getting the evidence. The murder victim had clearly been killed by someone left handed, which her supposed disappeared mate had been. The cut was made smooth from behind which had meant no resistance or someone that she trusted to be behind her. It had just been the matter of why he'd disappeared in the first place and what had been the motive.

Jealousy.

It was almost always jealousy. So it had been somewhat easy for Dusan to manipulate the situation and send Haley on the right track to looking into some of the mans off record properties which had been where he was hiding out. With enough money and connections Haley had been taken up and it was just the matter of following the small tracking device he'd put on her shirt tag to locate them. The altercation had been brief but a few threats from Dusan had left even the other murderous Alpha terror-stricken. It was strange how a man who worked supposedly in connection to the police had been more than willing to threaten things that even a murderer had a hard time believing Dusan might do. But in the end the police did arrive and thankfully no one had been hurt other than a bullet to the abductors knee for good measure. Dusan would say that it was on Haleys' behalf but otherwise seemed to say very little else.

Getting back to his house revealed that it was a multi million dollar building in this part of town. Three stories above ground with one story underneath where he kept his motorcycle and car with still room should she move hers in. It had three bedrooms but the floor plan was so spacious that he had brought in plenty of furniture and accessories. The home was filled with a blend of Eastern and Western motif that all seemed to work off the notions of wood accent and nature. His own smoky scent offering an almost dual note when entering the abode but he had been willing to help get her limited things up and situated in one of the guest rooms that would now become hers. Sufficient place at a desk for her to work in the bedroom or one out in the main living room should she want a change of view from the ceiling to floor window that looked down on the street below.

Dusan for the time being had briefly adjourned to deposit his jacket and gotten a bit more casual. His shoes and socks were departed and though he still wore his slacks his shirt sleeves had been rolled up to above the elbow and the buttons unfastened and tie now missing as he took a moment to just breathe after the loading in of everything.

Haley felt like a mess. That was due to getting herself involved in a murder investigation that ultimately ended up with her getting kidnapped when she'd found some more evidence that led her to the killer. She hadn't imagined getting involved as she was originally satisfied with taking what pictures she could and going on her own to see who she could speak to that would actually answer the questions she had. Naturally, she wouldn't have had any success on her own and would've been escorted out or arrested. The only reason she hadn't been was due to her working with a police consultant named Dusan. Of course, it was awkward working around him and they clashed every so often but their interaction somehow ended up with her agreeing to live with him and work for him.

The woman was on the fence about the idea, mainly because of the case they were working on and she hadn't wanted to get caught up in the same thing simply because she was Dusan's roommate. She'd made it clear that she would move out if he had any intentions of finding a mate of his own. It made sense to avoid anyone getting the wrong ideas. Haley had never lived with a man before that she wasn't with. ... She'd never been with any man at all so this was a different experience for her. Still, Dusan was helpful and he'd also rescued her from being killed so, in a way, she owed him for saving her life. Granted, she didn't like that he bugged her clothes because that meant he'd been going through her things for whatever reason but overall, Haley was glad to be alive. On top of that, she was allowed to report the truth of how the victim died at the request of the family. They'd realized their way of doing things didn't help the matter and despite knowing they would be shamed in the eyes of others, they still wanted to truth to be told.

Originally, because of the truth that'd been discovered as to why Maki had been killed and why her mate/husband had disappeared the way he had, she wasn't going to. The family felt otherwise about it. They admitted to feeling they made a mistake in making Maki marry someone she didn't love and believed their actions were the result of her death. She wasn't terrible by any means, she just wanted to be happy. They even told Haley if she were to report the truth to make sure that everyone knew that and she agreed to add that to her report. Which is what she'd been working on all day while Dusan had been out working on another case alone. It didn't seem right to take full credit for the story, so she made sure to credit Dusan as well. They did work together on this case. He didn't have to let her work with him. He could've flat-out said no, had her arrested, and saw her as another annoying reporter. But he didn't do that.

Haley was grateful for it and it gave her real hands-on experience but good god she was scared for her life. 'I'm just glad it's over. It was stupid of me to go off on my own like that but that was the only chance to get more evidence while the opportunity presented itself,' she thought while standing over the stove with the handle of the skillet in one hand and the spatula in the other. It'd felt like forever since she'd been able to fix a proper meal that wasn't inside a cup. So, she'd decided to take a break from working on the story to fix a skillet meal with sausage and vegetables in it. She could run the events all day through her head but she knew the outcome would be the same. There was no sense in stressing herself over it. The case was finally closed, the family could have some peace and all that was needed was the story to be finished. The real story and not the fabricated ones multiple news stations came up with that made Maki look bad.

'It's strange how I was turned down by multiple places over the assumption that I would report a false story. Yet here all these stations are doing the very thing that I'm against. What hypocrites they are,' she thought with an annoyed groan. It didn't help that she would have to look into stations that would be willing to take her story as is or settle for posting it on her blog but making it public where it could be found by everyone to read. That almost sounded like a safe bet but she wanted to try news stations that had the integrity to report the truth first before resorting to using her blog. But she'd used most of the morning to write and had finally taken a break close to noon to help out by cleaning around Dusan's place which was highly extravagant. Haley was expecting a basic apartment but it was very large and spacious.

For a guy living by himself, she thought it was strange he lived in such a place. It'd made sense to her now why he'd extended the offer for her to live with him. He clearly had the space. Even so, she was going to do her best to keep her own area clean and clean up around the place as well. She was also willing to cook from time to time. Haley felt she wasn't the greatest at cooking and while her cooking tasted fine to her, she was unsure of how he would feel about it. Whether he was hungry when came in, it was up to him to eat some of what she was cooking. There would be plenty left over once she got some of it. Sitting the spatula down, she turned the stove off as the meal was now complete. The only thing left was to let it cool for a bit before getting some. Haley stretched her arms above her head while releasing a yawn. She was so comfortable in the pajama set she was wearing that she hadn't changed out of it all day. She needed to before Dusan returned. She didn't want to give him any ideas after all.

Placing the skillet lid over the food, Haley exited the kitchen to head to the room that Dusan had allowed her to stay in. Of course, she didn't get that far due to noticing that he'd already returned which made him stiffen and sweat drop, her eyes on him as she stood there awkwardly. "U-Uh, erm ... hey?" Was the awkward response she'd given to Dusan's return. She wasn't sure what to say that would make this less awkward. She wasn't trying to appear lazy being in her pajamas all day but she couldn't help but feel comfortable being able to finally wear them since they were freshly cleaned. "S-Sorry, didn't expect you back until much later," she replied.

The smell of freshly cooking food had filled the air of the home and blending into his own scent  it painted the picture image of cooking on a cast iron skillet over an open fire out in the widlerness. But he hadn't figured that Haley would finish and make her way back over to her room. She had been trying to clean what mess there was. In truth he was a rather clean individual, or rather the home was given how little it was in use. SPIRIT had him hopping all over the place and rarely did he actually cook his own meals anymore. Usually it was eating out or something back at the HQ that someone else was providing. In a weird way this took him back to his early high school days. Staying over with someone else for them to make breakfast in the morning. Only this time it was his home. The girl had deserved a little bit of a respite after what she had gone through. Life threatening situations was normal for him but he was sure she hadn't faced such a thing before. Then to turn around and have to try and report the entire thing it was the least he could do. Besides she was something quite unusual in his type of life and he was sure she'd appreciate being set up with a reoccurring place to submit her news to. She was big on the truth and in Media that could be a hard sell some times but many didn't like the harsh light of truth and so having someone to shine it on others did give Dusan a sense of some schadenfreude.

Making sure that everything was prepped for her had been more hands on than others in a similar situation who might have otherwise just told her which room was hers and left it at that. But as rough as he was he had no desire to just have her feel like a stranger here. Returning home and moving about had been achieved with an innate stealth that he'd just grown to have over the years. He didn't even actively think about it much anymore but always delighted in it when he could spy that first look of surprise at his -sudden- appearing near people. Haley already was proving to be the kind of person he liked getting a reaction out of given how extreme they were.

"And why is that?"

It was such a short answer that in some ways might have been rude but he did find himself legitimately curious as to how long she thought he'd be out of the house. His watchful gaze settled onto her and noticed how cute she looked in the rather simple garments. His gaze would drift over her before meeting her eyes again. "I was just coming to put the last of your things in here so you can put them up when you like." A turn of his head showed the few provided storage boxes on the floor near the table filled with her clothing and few other assorted keepsakes.

Haley began to awkwardly fidget her hands at the ends of her nightshirt as she stood there, her gaze shifting in the opposite direction. "W-Well, I wasn't planning on having you see me still dressed in pajamas after all. S-So it just feels rather embarrassing," she admitted, her cheeks lightly flushed red. It would seem that Dusan had also brought in the last bit of her things that she said she'd get a little bit later and bring them inside. She appreciated him helping her but it feels like he was doing so much and she felt unable to contribute to it. She did want to earn her keep while she stayed here as she didn't feel comfortable staying for free. She did have to make money and finally have the opportunity to do so. It may take a minute but she still couldn't help but feel a little bad whereas she knew Dusan would say otherwise.

To quickly change the topic from her clothing so he wouldn't focus further on what she was wearing, she cleared her throat, her blush receding as she'd decided to inform him about the food in the kitchen she'd just finished. "Th-Thank you for bringing my stuff in. You didn't have to do that right away. That could've been done later," she told him. "Anyway, I just finished cooking something if you're hungry. I just used what you already had in the fridge and prepared a simple meal. If it's not to your taste, that's okay. I can just eat some of it and save the rest for later as leftovers. But the offer to eat some is there if you want." Haley wasn't close enough with Dusan to know what his favorite food was. She didn't expect them to be actually living together. Maybe in due time she'll figure it out but that means she would have to learn how to fix Japanese dishes. What she prepared was an American dish so she can only hope he liked it and it filled him up.

The blushing, the shy turn of the head, oh she was a cute one alright. Dusan felt like it would be all in good fun to play with her a bit. Still he didn't want to have her running off only on her first day here. It wasn't his intention to get here here just to have her feel uncomfortable and end up leaving or wanting to leave. Still as she would further speak to him about the meal she prepped he would start to walk closer to her. His expression and his eyes gave nothing away as to his motives or emotions other than he was listening to her. As he neared her he would reach one arm down and wrap it around her waist to draw her the last step in closer to him. For a moment he stood with her shorter frame so close to him that he looked down at her.

He was still stoic but his eyes didn't show anger or frustration. As intense as his gaze was and it feeling like it could look through the thin clothing she wore his gaze held a sort of hidden kindness to them. He slowly leaned down and for an instant there was the allusion to him kissing her on the lips but only at the last moment would he turn his head and place his lips to her cheek in a more chaste kiss. His voice speaking soft and low now that it was in closer proximity to her ear. "You look adorable and as much as I'd be fine with you walking around in nothing I figure you might not be comfortable enough with that so I thought I should bring in your clothes. Although I must admit I'm feeling rather ravenous after everything," He took just a moment to allow her mind to work over the double entendre. It would just let the briefest of moments to see if her mind went to something a bit more intimate before he capped off his statement. "So lets go eat."

Then came another small bit of play. He turned his body out and his arm which had been around her would slip slowly off from around her middle but in doing so it let his hand move against the small of her back before catching her hand and starting to walk her back out of the room and back towards the kitchen. He did not pull her or get aggressive but rather it was just as though it were the most normal thing in the world for him to be hand in hand with her as they walked. "If you were cooking for just yourself I can make something else so you have more to eat for later but I'm also happy to try what you've made. It smells good."

'Oh, he's silent. Maybe he doesn't really have an interest in American food. Well, I did say I can always eat it myself and save the rest for later. It's fine. I'll just do some research later on Japanese dishes and learn how to fix a few of them. Shouldn't be too hard,' Haley thought. She'd assumed that Dusan's silence meant that he wasn't hungry or simply not interested in American meals. This culture was different from her own and by living here in her car, for the most part, she was able to understand a bit of the language at least but sometimes he would speak with her in English too which also helped. It certainly helped when she worked together with him. Now she just needed to learn to read kanji as well as write it. That was going to be a task but one she was prepared for.

While her mind had wandered a bit, Haley hadn't expected Dusan to approach her so willfully which threw her off guard one and she found herself feeling a tad intimidated. At first, she figured he was going to stand in front of her but instead, he'd reached an arm around her waist out of the blue which made her shriek in embarrassment and lose her footing and she stumbled closer to him. Her face was completely red, unable to hide her shyness at the situation of being so close to him. She struggled to look up at him because of it but she did and there was still no change in his expression. Haley felt as if her body was frozen in Dusan's grasp. Unable to move away for whatever reason. She wasn't being held against her will. She could easily move. Yet her body just wouldn't. Even now, he had leaned his head closer to her own and the raven-haired woman had a look of confusion at first but then realized what he was about to do and it felt as if her brain was overloading. 'Wha-What's happening?! Why's he doing this? This ... This is inappropriate! We're not like that! He's going to...'

Haley immediately shut her eyes and prepared for this unexpected "kiss" that'd eventually been placed on her cheek which made her open her eyes and blink a few times in surprise. She'd then narrowed them when he'd finally spoken and said what he did in him preferring to walk around wearing nothing, making her sweat drop. At least he briefly brought the topic back to food but that didn't erase her heart pounding so hard against her chest at Dusan's actions just now. 'So he was teasing me. Jerk. He could've just thanked me for cooking something. Did he really have to do something like this?' Given her inexperience with men, she wasn't used to anyone flirting with her. She was used to the opposite. Either being ignored or pushed around in some way by those who believed themselves to be better than her. Dusan hasn't shown himself to be such a person but his teasing was going to do her heart in. She was going to go back to her room when he'd pretty much turned her back toward the kitchen while saying 'Let's go eat' which threw her off as she'd forgotten that she was originally going to go and change her clothes.

"Wait what?" Haley replied finally after getting her thoughts somewhat back together to respond. "N-No, I made enough. I'm not entirely good at cooking but I can make some things. ... A-American dishes though. I'll ... have to learn how to make Japanese ones," she told him.

It was apparent that he had made an impact on her in just the short interaction of her bedroom. Since his youth he'd learned to watch for those small micro tells in people but especially when giving romantic overtures. Alpha, Beta, Omega, each was distinct but small notations to show what they liked or what flustered them. It was important to not anger but just to prompt them. A little priming and testing the waters as it were. Haley had not pushed away nor had she gone rigid with resistance so it would seem she at least didn't dislike the overtures in her direction. Walking her back to the dining room he helped to draw a chair out for her to sit and released her hand. "Since you cooked, I'll go ahead and plate and then do the dishes when we're through. Sound good?"

In all truth he rarely cooked for himself anymore and often it was strictly for when company was by or the rare nights where he had been in the home alone. He wouldn't admit it but a small part of him disliked being alone... At Times. He liked the idea of choosing when to be alone rather than it being situations that he just found himself in. Alone when -he- decided? Well that was great. Alone when circumstance made it? Not so much. Maybe it was another reason he'd asked her here. But for now it was strictly altruism which is why he had to be careful. He didn't want her thinking he'd brought her here with the soul intention of just f---ing her, even if he had already envisioned the idea. "And you don't need to worry about the food being American, I'm originally from America myself. California to be specific." Walking to the adjacent kitchen he would take some plates and start putting the food out onto them. "What would you like to drink? I have a bottle of Bolgheri from Tuscany that would pair well with this if you'd like wine. I do have a bit of everything though."

"Ah ... sure. That's fine." Haley was just going to eat in the room she'd been provided to stay in. Naturally, she'd forgotten what it was like to sit down and eat with someone and just have a natural conversation with them. Thinking about it for a moment, she realized in America, many seemed to have also forgotten that concept if they weren't already mated with someone. Outside of those that did want that, others only seemed to focus on their biological needs and didn't want to be tied down to anyone. Seemed rather sad but at the same time, nobody could force something on others that they don't want. Yet, in this day in age, the practice of "arranged meetings" were still being done to this day. More so in other countries compared to America. Japan was definitely one of those countries that believed in such a practice but it also depended upon one's family and status.

Things Haley never about and put focus into. Whereas here in Japan, it was definitely more noticeable. Her mind had briefly wondered if Dusan had ever ventured out from Japan but she felt it rude to ask. Of course, she didn't have to when he'd said that he was originally from America. Specifically from the same state she was from. That would explain how he spoke English so well and it wasn't just him having learned the language well enough to speak it. But her expression showed her surprise at hearing this new information about him. "Y-You're from California as well?" she'd slipped and asked. Haley never did tell Dusan where she originally was from in America. That it was her country of origin. She didn't believe their interaction would be on this level to where they'd live together so she didn't think of having to divulge that information to him.

She sat down at the table, her hands awkwardly placed in her lap as she began to twiddle her thumbs nervously. Her pounding heart had eventually calmed down but she felt it begin to race again. 'Why do I feel so nervous now? Is it because of his teasing from earlier? Shit. Was trying not to think about that? I don't even know why he's teasing me like this. At least it's just that I suppose. I can try and brush it off and ignore it as much as I can. Though ... it is interesting to learn something new about it,' Haley thought to herself as she tried to remain calm and neutral as possible. He'd offered her a drink to which she'd raised her hand up to turn it down. "Yeah it's way too early in the day to be doing that. I'll just have some water or juice." Maybe she was just strange but she wasn't the type of person that had to have a liquored drink with every meal or pick a specific meal such as lunch or dinner to have it with. She hardly drank anything ever. She was too broke to buy such luxuries and because she never indulged in drinking much, she'd gotten used to just having a regular non-alcoholic drink with anything she ate. Even tea would be fine. "You're free to drink though. No issue there if you want to," she told him just so he wouldn't think he had to avoid alcoholic drinks on her behalf.

If anything it was easy enough to try and play a good host. The movements of the skillet and plates soon presenting the two of them with a good sized serving while keeping some of it off to the side for her to munch on later. A quick dip to the side and he retrieved two glasses from their respective cabinet and adjourned to  the fridge to get her some juice. It was a bit unusual but he took out a bit of blood orange lemonade which he had made a few days back to pour into a glass for her before returning it to the fridge. If she didn't like it there was always tea, water, or one of the more basic juices like regular orange juice. With her drink in his left hand and her plate in the right he brought it back to her and placed it down. "Don't let the deep red color fool you. It's actually blood orange juice and lemonade. Let me know what you think but if need be I can change it to regular orange juice." With that he turned about to return to the kitchen and get his own food. Starting to open the offered bottle of wine he poured himself a glass as he spoke.

"And yes I'm also from Cali. I was born and raised in San Bernadino. Not exactly a great neighborhood but I suppose it got me used to assault and murder investigations." Returning with the wine and food he sat across from her. He recalled how he had looked into her in those first few minutes of their meeting but otherwise wouldn't let on he'd done such a thing. She had already been a little off-put by his tagging her but it was just the sort of man he was. Funny, looking into and pursuing people was also the job of the news media which meant she'd have to get used to that little bit of required assertiveness if she was hoping to get people to answer her. "I only moved to Japan within the past year or so."

Haley sat in silence, waiting for Dusan to respond to her question while also watching him set their place on the table and then went to pour her a glass of what he'd said to be blood orange juice and lemonade. She'd heard of so many different lemonade flavors that she couldn't keep up with them. All of them were in a variety of different colors so she had no reason to doubt that's what he was giving her. Besides, it wasn't hard to know if what she was drinking had alcohol in it. She'd be able to taste as well as smell it. She nodded, accepting the glass with the beverage in it. Instead of starting with her food, she started with the drink, taking a small sip before setting the glass down on the table.

This had proceeded in Dusan clarifying that he indeed was from California but he didn't seem to favor it much which she understood. There were people who loved the state and those who felt the opposite. Haley wouldn't say she loved California. She was from there but she didn't have a lot of enjoyable memories of living there. And it had gotten expensive to live there as well so she would've eventually been homeless and living in her car either way. So her situation wouldn't have been any different than how she'd been living in Japan before currently given a place to comfortably stay with Dusan. She picked up her utensils and began eating. Admittedly, she was very terrible at using chopsticks as her fingers were highly uncoordinated in attempting to hold them so she preferred a fork which she was glad that he had some.

Having researched a lot about Japan and its culture, Haley was fully aware that using one's hands over utensils wasn't garnered a bunch of stares. Considering she didn't have much money on her to sit and eat inside many places that only provided chopsticks to use, whenever she could get food, her car was a very convenient spot to eat without worrying about looking uncultured. She didn't think Dusan would react the same as those native to the country would about it but she still wanted to show that she had some manners. After taking a bite of her food, she finally decided to respond to him. "I can't blame you for filling that way about California. I wouldn't have guessed you were from there," she said. "I'm from there but I have no real attachments back home. Plus, the ever-increasing prices would've ended up with me out on the streets in my car anyway. Plus, there aren't many people that live there that have powers and aren't human which is what I found to be interesting given how popular to state is with people. I guess my interest in wanting to see that is what made me come to Japan. Seeing that, they're no different from someone without them and leading normal lives or trying to. When I ... lived there ... I don't think anyone either believed they existed or favored such people. That was the indication I got. I don't know why but it was very strange," Haley explained as she took another bite of her food.

That was her initial reason for coming to Japan. It wasn't much of a story that would drive interest back home but confirming that such people did exist, they seemed to not really bother anymore. At least the ones she'd initially seen amongst crowds anyway since she's been here. But then it went from that to wanting to find work in the country and yet she struggled and continued to have hope that maybe it would change that she'd be able to get something. Had she not met Dusan, she wouldn't have gotten that chance. Haley was grateful even if she found the man in front of her to be very questionable at times.

Being attached to anything was honestly something Dusan hardly ever did. He was possessive that was no doubt but to say that he was attached? That seemed to incline itself towards having a need for it and certainly his otherwise aloof nature wouldn't abide by anyone seeing him that way. He and his mother had never been close but he did care for her, ensuring that she was well off but it wasn't as though they spoke day to day. Just the occasional check in but otherwise it had been an uneasy calm between them after his fathers passing. Maybe it was that much like with his father it had been she hadn't -wanted- to know what Dusan got up to. Where the money came from or what he would do when he disappeared for days at a time. But in the here and now it was free of any tethers. Heck he even sometimes left SPIRIT to handle it's own affairs for a while before hopping back in to ensure some part of the planet hadn't gotten torched or invaded. Sitting across from her he listened as he would start into eating the food she had prepared.

It was pleasant and even though he did like things a bit more on the spicy side he could appreciate what she had made. The sausage a little peppery from his initial selection but he could listen and eat at the same time, ensuring that he always swallowed and cleaned his pallet with a sip of his wine before he'd speak again. "I know what you mean. When I was growing up there was the idea of the supernatural being an impossibility but as time went by it proved to be less and less unusual to see or hear about super powered beings moving around. Some with minimal powers and others who could very well destroy a city without much thought. Say what you want but I think people with powers like that should be kept tabs on." He thought a little bit about how he'd been able to move himself further ahead financially thanks to his own powers but he had no interest in living a gaudy manner. Personal jets, gold toilets, things like that were so superficial and just begging for attention. He preferred being able to be out of the public eye. A nice enough home, his motorcycle, a car, and some alien tech was all he needed. "Going back to Crime though, I think in many ways though it helped prepare me. Better for trial by fire in the idea that now nothing takes you by surprise. I learned very young that people had the capacity to be terrible and self serving."

"I see..." Haley wasn't sure how she felt about that. There would be a cause for concern whether someone's abilities were lesser so she didn't see much of a difference. Stalking those more powerful than others to make sure they don't destroy the entire planet seems excessive. While she should be a concerned civilian about that, there was a part of her that wondered do any of those people that are super powerful even liked being that powerful. Want those powers? There shouldn't be the impossibility that such people would find having so much power to be a burden and maybe never even use their abilities. Haley only felt that was a necessity to keep track of them if they were repeat offenders in using their powers to cause problems for others. Just innocent people trying to live as regularly as they could with dangerous powers that many would fear sounds already nerve-racking. Adding being watched on top of that was doing too much.

"I don't agree with watching others who are extremely powerful and I have reasons for it but I know that sometimes it is best to keep one's thoughts to themselves. Not everyone likes an opposing opinion by someone who technically isn't part of such a world," Haley replied as she ate some more of her food. She left her response at that while listening to Dusan talk a bit more about his life. It would seem that he lived a life of crime growing up compared to her, she grew up fairly normal. The only difference was it just felt that nobody wanted her around and acted as if she was a bother to be around. Most of that had to do with her being a Beta but she learned to ignore complaints related to her secondary gender. Not like she could do anything about that. Dusan didn't seem to have that sort of issue growing up but there was no denying California's crime rates. "California is no stranger to crime. I know I wouldn't have faired well being homeless there." Which was true. There was no need to explain further. And occasionally watching the local news from her state, it hasn't gotten any better either.

Her voiced disagreement caused him to briefly pause in his eating and his gaze shifted to watching her rather intently. It wasn't a glare or even a scowl but it was a look that read of judgement. He would let her explain her stance and view even if it was a place that they clearly had opposing views. She was a relative innocent to the universe and that wasn't her fault. All Dusan knew was that there were plenty aliens and humans who would easily take advantage of such a woman. He himself had semi used her just to lure out the murderer but as he had expressed during her rescue that he wouldn't allow anyone or anything to touch her. The notion of him being a part of that self named super powered world was true but to confess as much gave away a detail of himself and so for now he too would just let it hang.

California wasn't a sore topic. Hell, being raised a criminal wasn't either. It was just the notion of his father that made him want to get violent. But if anything it had molded in Dusan that sense of manipulation and intensity to do whatever it took that he carried with him. Moving back to the topic of crime was an easy enough one for him and he took a break from eating to just sip from his glass and recline in his chair a little to watch her. His eyes were uncanny and carried that sensation that it felt like nothing could hide from him as the expression of judgement morphed back into his regular looks. "You're quite a paradox you know? You want the truth to be told but you believe in peoples privacy? How do you navigate that when it comes to stories? Most find they don't do well under the light of truth otherwise they'd be reporting on it already." He wasn't accusatory or even belittling the notion. Rather he was curious to decipher her own moral code.

"You can want the truth about something or someone but also respect their privacy in not releasing that truth to the public if they don't want the world to know it. However, I can say it depends on what that truth is. One thing I won't cover up is obvious criminal activity. If one is clearly guilty of something, there is no guarantee to trust them to not do it again." Haley ate some more of her food. Her stance hadn't changed on wanting to report the truth. But not every situation is similar to Mari's where family or even friends care so much about a person that they would prefer the truth to be out as well as explain how things ended up the way they did. Only those closest to someone know them both inside and out. And while Mari was with someone that wasn't her mate, her family knew she wasn't trying to be spiteful in being with someone else. Rather, she would've preferred to have fallen in love with someone and being happy with them over the idea of an arranged pairing set up by her family.

However, the public didn't have a great view of Mari as they didn't know her, and that was the reason why the family was okay with the story about everything being released. To clear her name and show that she was someone that never would intentionally hurt others. Haley was willing to not write the story but Mari's family was already sorrowful in losing her, they didn't want everything about them and Mari to be further damaged. In cases such as those, that's when Haley would think about whether or not is a story worth telling to the world. Sometimes it isn't. She'd only do so unless instructed otherwise to do so. Protecting the privacy of actual criminals she could've cared less about if they're going about doing harm to others, whether it is physical or not. There was criminal activity out of survival but those situations varied as well. No one wants to be a criminal and can be forced into being one against their will. Not everyone can get out of those types of situations alive but the ones that manage to are quite lucky to never have to go back to such a life. There were exceptions but they're few and far between.

She wasn't sure how Dusan would feel about such an opinion. Instead, she simply responds to his second question to avoid going into a philosophical discussion about the dangers of life and how to survive it. "I simply write the truth as long as I'm given the facts behind those stories. There are exceptions and circumstances, yes. I'll only write what I'm allowed and as long as it's the truth. If I'm told to not report a story at all I won't do it. If I'm asked to leave something out, I need a good reason as to why I need to do so. Everyone wants their privacy but we shouldn't be putting people with powers under surveillance. I feel as if that would pit them against those that don't have powers and that sounds like a chaotic world to live in where everyone is fighting and judging. We have people judging others now and that's the societal norm regarding secondary genders. I don't even like that but at least no one is at each other's throats over it," she said, reaching her hand forward taking the glass of juice, and taking a few sips from it to wash down the food she ate.

Her sense of honor was cute. In some ways it reminded him of Claire before she had become a bit more jaded after being off world. The two of them often were polarizing as far as the ideas of security and the end results justifying the means. He still didn't agree but he had to admire that for a woman her age that she was at least trying to have a moral compass. He had his fill of food and kept the somewhat relaxed body language of watching her and listening. Idly his fingers swirled the base of his wine so that he didn't appear too still and make her uncomfortable. "I concur that some secrets are best kept but what I mean to say is that people who don't want to be reported on are often the ones who should be. People don't want the truth published more times than not and it's the very reason it should be. Take what happened to Mari as an example. A family was so ashamed of the idea of their daughter having an affair that they impeded her murder investigation. Cops were so eager not to make waves with a political family they were either to willing or to stupid to acknowledge details of the crime scene to indicate she had been murdered elsewhere and dropped off." Sipping his drink he finished off the bit of wine that had remained in it. "Then again Japan isn't exactly used to very much murder so I suppose that could go either way."

He would stand and start to make for the kitchen. "I'm getting a refill do you want anything?" Returning to the wine bottle he poured another bit into the long stemmed glass. "As to those with powers I didn't say that those without powers need to be the ones keeping tabs. But I think if there' the possibility of a neighbor nuking my home just because they have a rough rutt or sneeze too hard I'd like to keep that under observation." In truth he knew it was hypocritical. It was a rule he never wanted applied to him but he also would admit that it would be stupid if people didn't think he *should* be watched. But for now he did most of the monitoring and kept it on the down low. Better that than to be accountable to the authorities. Lord only could imagine how many governments would freak out if the knew what he got up to sometimes.

"Powers can also make criminal investigations even harder. Can you imagine someone constantly using someone who can change appearance for an alibi? Or teleporting into banks to rob them? Do everyone use powers that way? No. But it's worth keeping in mind. Martial artists must register themselves as living weapons. Put a man in front of you with lightning powers to black out a city I think that's quite a bit worse." Still he wasn't badgering or pressing her to change her mind. This was all a sort of intellectual exercise and it let him get to know her a bit better.
