That was true, he decided. School took time. It took money. It took focus. Focus was one of the many many things Karter knew on some level he had to work on. He could focus when it came to his own select few hobbies of choice, but anything outside of that he struggled with. Karter's gaze shifted to look at the young woman properly, not let his gaze wander. She addressed him...by his last name? Is that now we're supposed to do things here? Oh god. Am I THAT out of the loop? He silently demanded in alarm.
"Ah! O-Of course. Whatever you’re most comfortable with. I don’t mind, but I get it if it’s your preference. Would you prefer if I tried to use the term terms in turn with you?" Karter asked.
He would bend to expectations as needed to make someone feel safe. Safety wasn’t something he expected many people felt around him, given his unpredictability, but...she seemed nice, and she certainly hadn’t been put off by him, which was a nice change of pace. Of course, Karter was aware- and putting conscious effort into it in a desire to try and improve his ways of approaching people he met- that he was restraining himself from his usual cynical, defensive mannerisms, though it was not easy.
"No, you’re not wrong. First year in college, majorin' in psychology. I want a social life, and I’ve always had a more...ah...pessimistic outlook on life, shall we say. I thought that if I could find a way to learn to understand the mind, maybe I could understand better, could do better in life, not just school. The key to absolutely everythin' in this world if you’ve gotta understand it."
