Cafe Encounter (Open)
« on: August 01, 2020, 07:47:24 pm »

As always, work was busy for Bridget and he was glad to be done with it. Working in Japanese politics wasn't easy and one mistake could have everyone breathing down his neck. It was why he made sure that everything was done and settled properly the first time before going home for the day. The blonde preferred it when things were in order which made it easier for him to tackle certain tasks that depended upon which required the most attention. This didn't make it any less stressful working in the career field he was in. As an Alpha, it was expected of him to pursue a good career. No one enjoyed the topic of politics but like his parents, he wanted to be someone that the people could trust to do the right thing in times of crisis which is why he also wanted to work in the same job field. Japan was very different from America so that required him to do lots of extensive research on important protocols and people which his grandfather helped him with.

He was still getting the hang of things and was doing well seeing as how his grandfather had no complaints about how he did his job. The last thing Bridget wanted was for his grandfather to be upset with him at doing or saying something he shouldn't which he was always careful not to. Today was more research, training, and meetings. All of which he needed a break from and was glad to be clocked out for the day. The one place he could go to unwind before going home was the Melody Cafe in the area that sold his favorite drink, peach boba tea. Having that made him feel so much better on top of the atmosphere of the cafe being very relaxing and quiet. He entered the cafe, the sounds of the bells chiming, the cool breeze of the AC on full blast, and the mixture of smells between coffee, milkshakes, tea, and sweet treats were enough to erase his stress. He stood in line behind five other people and waited for his turn.

It wasn't long after he arrived that another person came into the cafe and without so much as a warning, rudely skipped ahead of him and two other people while griping at them that they had no time to stand there and wait all day. Bridget blinked in surprise at this, raising a brow as he just stared at the person. It annoyed him seeing this since he and everyone else was here before this person but he didn't like confrontation. They were one extra rude person so it wouldn't be long before they would be waited on and they would leave. It didn't stop everyone else in front of him from complaining though, which is to be expected. They also ordered those very same people to shut their hole in an authoritative tone. It wasn't hard to figure out from their mannerisms that this person was an Alpha and using that to get over on others to do what they wanted.  It was already a long day for him and he just hoped that this person didn't make it worse. The blonde just bit his tongue and waited for this person to eventually be serviced so they can leave before anyone decided to deck them in the face for being an idiot.

Kuri had been grateful for school to be over for the day. It meant she had the rest of the day to relax and do what she wanted. Normally, she'd go to the local bookstore to see if they had anything new in stock to read that was interesting but today, the brunette felt like going to the Melody Cafe instead. She hadn't been in a while since she'd been living in Tokyo with her sister. She'd only gone to the cafe a few times. It wasn't a bad place the reason she didn't frequent it as much but more because her school schedule kept her so busy. With homework and after school clubs she was a part of, her free time became pretty limited for the month.

She and her sister were still trying to get settled in around that time as well but things were set for them so that was one less distraction to deal with in terms of finding a place to stay. They looked out with the Amestia Inn. The people were nice and they served good food too. Kuri couldn't help but feel a bit spoiled living there but it beats living with their mother. Going to nice places such as cafes without being known as that woman's daughter back in Domino was hard and depressing. But here, there were no worries.

She felt like treating herself today since her sister Anzu had given her, her allowance already but she'd yet to spend it on anything since she didn't need anything specific. Buying something from Melody Cafe wouldn't break her pocket too much. She was in the mood for a chai tea and she knew they made it here and it was super delicious to her. She made her way down the sidewalk path that led to the cafe and once she reached it, she went inside. The AC of the building on blast which helped considering how hot it was outside today.

Kuri pulled out her phone to send a quick text to Anzu to let her know where she was and that she'll be home soon. Once she finished doing that, she stood at the end of the line but it was hard to see the situation currently going on before her. There was a long line of people in front but they were complaining out loud. At first, she believed it to be something going in the back with preparations but leaning to the side to get a better look, she saw the root of the problem. There was a customer that many were griping and moaning about having broken in front of them, an Alpha to be precise. Kuri understood why they were complaining. She'd complain too if she were already here and someone just blatantly decides to jump the line ahead of everyone.

She was glad the situation didn't turn into something more like a physical altercation. It wasn't that serious that people needed to fight over a spot in line. Of course, being short like she was, she felt like the smallest person there compared to everyone else in front of her. This included a tall blonde young man who wasn't openly complaining about the current situation like everyone else was. She couldn't assess why that was but seeing as how he didn't completely look to be in a bad mood, she felt it necessary to be polite to keep the air of positivity flowing. Smiling, she gave a wave to the blonde. "Konnichiwa," she greeted.

Bridget was glad the line was able to move forward despite the inconvenience of the Alpha that showed up and broke in line ahead of everyone. They got what they wanted and left the cafe but others in line steadily complained about it, except for himself. He just waited patiently until his turn to be serviced came. There were a few more people that came into the cafe after the small commotion was over except for one which was a young girl that looked to be around the age of Bridget's sister. Maybe even younger. He could be wrong since these days people looked younger despite being older and there was nothing wrong with that.

At least she didn't comment on what was going on when she entered but instead spoke to him with a friendly smile on her face. Bridget hadn't been expecting this but unlike the Alpha that'd left, he wasn't going to be rude and acknowledged the girl that spoke to him with a curt nod before his turn finally came. He ordered his usual drink, a peach boba tea. He paid the cashier and then found himself an empty table near the window to sit at. All the other tables were taken either by one or more people so he was surprised this one wasn't. He sat down then took a sip of the refreshing fruity beverage, heaving a relaxed sigh.

He then placed his briefcase atop the table, reaching into it to pull out a manga book he'd bought yesterday to sit there and read it for a while. It was one of Bridget's many hobbies he enjoyed whenever he had free time to do what he wanted that didn't involve work or some social gathering that was either work or family-related. Outside of that, he wasn't someone that was sociable. He had his reasons for keeping his distance from people, something his grandfather and parents didn't seem to understand since they had a habit of constantly arranging "mate meetings" for him.

He couldn't be upset with them for trying to help him not be lonely in a sense but it felt forced and unwanted. Then there were his fears regarding his powers hurting someone unintentionally. This was the constant worry he had every day and his way to escape was either through playing video games whenever he was at home to do so or reading. Whether home, bookstore, library or the cafe. Like right now. He opened the manga in his hand to the last page he was reading and began to further engross himself into its story.

The young man Kuri spoke to acknowledged her with a nod before his turn to place his order came. That was better than nothing and he wasn't rude or scowling when he did it. A plus for effort in spreading positivity. She couldn't help but chuckle to herself as she thought that. It always helped to put a smile on someone else's face and at least the incident from earlier with the Alpha that'd left was over. No one made it worse and they just focused on their orders. Once the guy had gotten his order, it was Kuri's turn and she placed her money on the counter and ordered a large chai tea. While she waited for it, her phone buzzed, indicting she had a text from her sister.

She always knew when her sister was texting her. They were both still pretty new to Tokyo so Kuri hadn't made too many friends yet. She was getting to know everyone at Hakoniwa Academy and it was going to take some time. She wasn't rushing it and at least she didn't have to worry about anyone knowing about her mother and ruining her chances in forming friendships with others. Viewing the text, Anzu was confirming she'd received it but also letting Kuri know to not stay out so late. Her sister was such a worrywart but she loved her. She responded to the text quickly and put her phone back in the side of her backpack. By then her chai tea had finally been prepared which she happily had taken and begin to sip on it.

Since she was going to stick around the cafe for a while to enjoy the AC before getting back out in the god awful heat, the brunette-haired teen tried to find a table to sit at but from what she could tell, all of them were taken. However, she spotted the guy in line from earlier sitting by himself at a table by the window reading a manga book. Kuri became intrigued seeing that and took a chance in walking toward the table, wearing the same friendly smile on her face. "Hi there," she greeted him again. "I don't mean to bug you but every other table is taken. Is it alright if I join you?" Kuri asked politely. "I'm Mazaki Kuri, by the way."

Bridget was a few pages into the manga he was reading. It was a story in a supernatural setting where vampires and humans lived among each other. He'd bought the first three volumes of the series since it piqued his interest enough to read it. Currently he was reading book two since he'd finished the first one already. As he turned to the next page, the a cheerful feminine voice spoke to him, causing him to look up from the book and his eyes now on the brunette-haired girl that was in line behind him earlier who'd spoken to him. She was inquiring about sitting with him since every other table in the cafe was taken at the moment. It would seem she decided to stick around instead of leaving, which he couldn't blame her since it was hot as balls outside. Politely, he nodded to her again and this time spoke to her, "Hello." Grabbing his peach boba tea, he took a sip from it, then sat it back down before speaking further. "Sure, you're free to sit down if you want. I probably won't be very good company to hang out with though," he replied awkwardly.

"Arigatou gozaimasu," Kuri thanked him as she sat down across from the young man, placing her drink on the table in front of her. Hearing him state that he wouldn't be of good company to her made her tilt her head to the side. She didn't understand why he would say that since she did ask if she could join him. She didn't want to be a bother to him after all. Maybe there was another reason for it. She wanted to ask but didn't want to offend him by doing so. Instead, she kept the conversation going but keeping it simple. "Well, I don't know about that. You seem to be enjoying yourself over here reading a manga. You don't peg me as someone boring," she replied with a small laugh. She took a sip of her chai tea before speaking again. "So, what's your name if you don't mind me asking? I'm still pretty new to the city so just trying to meet some new people and make friends."

Bridget believed the young girl who'd introduced herself to him as Mazaki Kuri moments ago was giving him far too much credit. Maybe he wasn't giving himself enough credit since he wasn't used to taking compliments from people, especially when he felt he didn't deserve them. She'd also said she was new to the city as well, which it wasn't rare for Bridget to come into contact with people that's never been to Tokyo before but they were normally people he worked with and not outside of his profession. She seemed excited to be here so at least she was being optimistic in her venture to the city. Kuri then asked him his name. "Ah, my name is Bridget Pendragon. You're sweet, Kuri but you're giving me way too much credit having just met me," Bridget said as he placed the book down on the table beside his drink.

"Hm? I am? Huh. Here I thought I was just being honest," Kuri laughed. "Your name is very pretty, Bridget-san and please don't sell yourself short. You're probably quite interesting and you just don't know it. I have to remind my older sister a lot of times when she gets down in the dumps and worries constantly about what others will think of her. Ah, silly me. I'm rambling on. How about you tell me about the manga you're reading. You seemed pretty into it."

Kuri was very forward and friendly when talking to people but she knew there were many people out there that were like her sister in some ways putting themselves down for different reasons. She may have just met Bridget but she didn't want to see him doing that to himself. She figured getting him to talk about the manga he was reading might help with that. It will allow her to learn a little bit more about him as a person in terms of what he liked and of course to keep the conversation going. Kuri didn't want him to feel uncomfortable talking to her. She believed it would be more uncomfortable sitting there not talking to each other. This gives her something to do to pass the time until she was ready to head home.

'I see. She has an older sister. Didn't expect that,' Bridget thought. He wondered what kind of person Kuri's older sister was for her to feel constantly worried about what others would think of her. With him, he was worried about people being afraid of him because of his powers and knowing how dangerous they were, that was the reaction he expected a lot of the time because it's one he always received from people. He didn't want to compare his problems to that of Kuri's older sister. There was no telling what she'd gone through that made her feel the way she does. Well, he could say that Kuri's older sister was lucky to have her then. They sounded close from how she spoke of her briefly. Bridget would like to have that relationship with his sister but his powers played a factor in her fear and indifference towards him.

She barely showed an interest in anything he was doing and always focused on her own thing. He believed maybe when he had them more under control, they could be close again. He would like to spend more time with her without her finding reasons to get out of doing that with him. Oh well, there was nothing he could do about it at the moment. Right now, he didn't want to be rude and continue to sit silently as Kuri waited for a response from him. "Your sister is lucky to have you, Kuri," Bridget finally said, then placed his hand atop the manga book since she'd inquired about it earlier. "As for the manga, it may not be something of interest to you but it is a story about a Vampire who's a Knight from a different time and is thrust into the modern world where humans and vampires coexist. Sounds weird I know but the story so far is rather interesting."

"Ah arigatou. My sister would be happy to hear that from someone," Kuri said with a giggle, then took another sip of her chai tea and listened to Bridget talk a little bit about the manga he was reading. He was quiet for a good while and it did make her think she'd over stepped her bounds trying to push for a conversation. It was good to see that wasn't the case and they both could have a really good conversation with each other. "Ohh so that's the story of the manga you're reading. That sounds vaguely familiar to me. It's possible I've glossed over the series in the bookstore and didn't think much of it. It sounds like an intriguing story. If you ever finish it, I'd like to hear how it ends."

That seemed rather forward of her considering they'd just met but Kuri was telling the truth in wanting to know how the series ended should Bridget ever finish it before she got the chance to buy it and check it out for herself. If he was a frequent visitor of the cafe, it'd give her a reason to come here more to see him and talk. He looked like he could use someone to talk to instead of sitting alone. It also beat having to sit out in the heat waiting on the subway to get back to the inn. She could briefly hang out here and spend time getting to know some more people.

He was surprised that Kuri wanted to hear how the series ended which also meant she expected to hang out with him more. Bridget didn't know how he felt about that. She was being kind to him so it would be rude to say no to her. But she seemed genuinely interested which meant she read a lot of manga in her downtime. Manga didn't appeal to everyone as it did for people like himself. Many would prefer to read novels over manga or comics. He didn't judge since novels were good to read sometimes but only if the stories for the books were decent. There were a lot of novels that just lacked a lot of substance and it was clear who the audience was for them. There were some just didn't like reading at all yet they enjoyed and understood how to use a phone and what social media was.

He didn't peg Kuri for someone to be into social media platforms like his own sister was but she appeared to be in the age range of those that frequently used it. Even those around Bridget's age were obsessed with them. It was interesting to have a conversation with someone so young that wasn't looking at their phone and taking selfies with it the entire time. "If you truly want to know then sure. I don't mind telling you how the series ends once I do finish it. I only have the first three books right now. I have to buy the others. If it's something up your alley, I'd give it a recommendation. And I do come to the cafe on occasion so if you don't find me here I will more than likely be working. My life is pretty busy so I'm happy to have gotten off much earlier today than normally do."

"Oh no don't worry. I wouldn't harass anyone to hang out with me when they're busy. I have school myself so it keeps me just as busy as having a job would. But I definitely want to hear how the manga ends when you finish it," Kuri assured Bridget with a smile. "This will be the first time in awhile that I've been able to stop by the cafe for some chai tea. It's my favorite." She laughed, grabbing her drink to take a sip from it then placing it down. "So I'm curious, do you do anything outside of work like go to school? You look like a university student that's why I asked. But I can tell you're definitely older than me though. Which is totally cool. Sounds like it could be fun having older friends. Hope you like music because I can talk about it all day until the cows come home." Kuri laughed again. She was trying to keep the mood light and relaxed as possible since she got the vibe from Bridget that he may be a little uncomfortable. Thus the reason for not staying on one topic entirely too long since she didn't want him to grow board talking about just one thing.

She liked chai tea and was very vocal as well as cheerful when speaking to him. A complete contrast from the people he normally spoke with. Robotic and business like. Just being asked about what he does outside of work made him shrink up inside sometimes but his parents and his grandfather often tell him that he needed to be more social with people. Not every conversation had to be political but talking to regular people was difficult for him. Kuri was very open about her likes and wanting to be friends with him. He seriously didn't know if that was such a good idea. Not without telling her about his powers and prayed she wouldn't run away from him all freaked out. As he sat there, his lips formed into a frown, his hands also placed atop the table. "I ... don't attend university. I only work," he told her, being rather evasive in divulging information about himself. Not that he didn't want to, he just wasn't used to doing so in regular settings and it usually didn't end well for him whenever he tried. "I apologize. I don't mean to be such a downer. You're delightful to speak to. It's a rarity for me to have normal engaging conversations with others," Bridget admitted.

Kuri noticed the expression on Bridget's face, indicating that she was right in him being uncomfortable talking to her. She also sensed that there may have been a different reason behind it from what she was thinking it was. That said, she bowed her head apologetically to him. "Gomen nasai, Bridget-san. I've put you on the spot without meaning to. It's just, well, I don't have any friends and I'm just eager to be friends with you seems to have made you uncomfortable. Demo, I'd like to learn more about you regardless even if you're not a uni-student. Maybe you can talk about your place of work and how you like it or don't. Your choice. Anything you wish to talk about, I'm all ears and willing to listen. I can forget to let people talk sometimes so feel free to tell me to shush and let you speak," she smiled at him but also laughed once again.

Bridget shook his head when he heard Kuri apologize to him. "No, please don't feel bad for being yourself. It's just for me ... I don't usually share a lot of my life with others that genuinely take an interest that isn't outside of my work." It wasn't his intention to make Kuri feel bad if he had but she remained in good spirits so that was a plus. He had faults just as everyone else did and he could admit when he was wrong like not thinking about what he says to others and how they would perceive it. He may be cautious but these days people got offended over the littlest of mistakes. That and he didn't like getting his hopes up that things wouldn't turn into a catastrophe for him.

He was grateful Kuri gave him an open window to talk about anything he felt comfortable with discussing with her. She mentioned music and that was something he enjoyed on occasion. Sometimes whenever he was reading and he didn't want to be in complete silence. This made him curious as to what her favorite genres were. "Since you mentioned that you like music, I do listen to it sometimes. I've listened to a lot of different genres of music where there were decent songs created. Though there's this new type of music out called 'screamo' and 'dubstep'. I don't get the appeal but those are about the only areas of music I don't really like," Bridget told him.

"And I also like playing video games in my spare time whenever I'm not reading anything." He wasn't sure if Kuri was into games but even the blonde knew girls could be gamers if they had a particular game series they enjoyed. If she did, he was more than comfortable talking games with her too.
